V&H true duals for '11 SE2
« on: February 25, 2011, 09:30:52 AM »

Hey gang, here goes my first post to spend money on the bike I don't have yet!  :orange: Will be back from deployment sometime around May and taking delivery of my Black/Crimson as soon as I get home.
I have several questions about exhaust, I really like the true duals and am thinking about going with the V&H Dresser Duals.  I also wanted to get the Monster Oval slip ons but the note says they will not fit bikes with extended saddle bags.  To me it looks like they would fill in that space perfectly.  Has anyone had any experience with these?  I read other posts that a lot of folks are using the Monster Rounds, but just curious if the Ovals would fit.
If I get these and the FuelPak, will that pretty much take care of my exhaust needs?  :nixweiss:  And one last thing, will the HD dealer install these for me before I pick it up and does this affect the warranty at all?
Thanks for your help in advance, I know there will be a lot more coming!  :huepfenlol2: Y'all ride safe, maybe see you on the road this summer!  :drink:

Go with the monster rounds or the high output.  The extended bag opening is round so why fill a round opening with an oval muffler

Best power:

#1 two into one
#2 two into two...V&H X-pipe header or Fulsac X-pipe header or stock headpipe withour cat in collector
#3 True-duells

Have that exact setup on my limited, and I'm pretty sure that the monster ovals will not fit on your bike with the extended bags.  I'll see if I can dig up a picture and attach.

While I'm looking, I should take a moment to give you a heads up.  Depending on what tuning solution you are going to use in the long run, it would be worth knowing that they changed the o2 sensor size and location on the '10+ touring models.  They went from 18mm to 12mm heated sensors and relocated them from up the pipe to about midway.  This is really only useful if your going to be using any of the solutions that use wide band o2 sensors which are still 18mm and work best installed in the old locations (ThunderMax, PCV w/ Autotune, etc.)

If your going to just swap pipes and use the current ECM and stock o2 sensors and the Fuelpack, or a open loop tuning system, then no issues using the newer version of the pipe.  If you haven't thought about a tuning solution for the long term, and plan on adding something different later, be worth getting an idea which way your leaning and grab the pipe that will save you time and money later.

The '09 version of the pipe comes with the 18mm in the old locations and will fit on your bike should you need that setup.

And now for that pic I just found off the easy rider's thread - best I could get to show the clearance requirements.  Bikes in the shop so I can't grab a new pic.  I cropped and blew it up a bit, so it got grainy; however, shows the monster ovals on the right, a RG with the extended bags on the left, and I think that's a SG up in the front with extended bags as well.

Good luck with the upgrades.  :2vrolijk_21:

Edit: To answer your last question, my dealer installed them while working on some other stuff and it did not affect my warranty.  MWV with different dealers, best to just check with them.

Found one more shot that might show the clearance better.  While in some cases it may look like it will fit, I can tell ya that them suckers are very wide at their widest point and I think that even if you manage to get them installed, they'll probably end up burning your bags.

Wow, thanks for the great info and pics Envithyx!  That really showed me what I needed to know.  I can see now that there's no way the ovals will fit.  They didn't look that big in the pictures.  I looked at the Hi-Output slipons and they look like they will fill in the space very well.
Regarding Beemers comment, I don't like the looks of the X-pipe at all and am really just looking for good sound and looks, but want to sacrifice as little power as possible.  I don't plan to do a lot of other engine mods, so that being said, might I be better off to go with the stock pipes and a good muffler like the V&H HI-Output?  And if I do that, will the airflow change enough to still require the FuelPak and should I look at a better breathing air cleaner also?
I sure do appreciate the help as I am absolutely clueless about this stuff.  The last pipes I put on a bike were Big Radius 2into2 on my Big Dog and all I had to do was re-jet the carb and go!

I went with the Fullsac X-Pipe, 1 3/4" baffles, and the TTS fuel map.  I like the look of the stock pipes and didn't want to change the factory appearance.

The whole aspect of pipes, slipons, etc. is large topic and each person's goals will be different.  Thus, you'll end up with more than one answer which is correct in the perspective of the one to suggest.  They are all good suggestions and factors that you should consider.

However, to go into the aspects you should consider is a very long prospect, and may be more than what this thread was created for.  So I sent you a few PMs with details to think about based on your original goals as stated in the original post.  Hope they help.  ;D

:2vrolijk_21: - a great setup.  Bigdog1, should you decide to keep the stock slipons, the re-baffling aspect that I mentioned in my PMs would be like the above setup.

I'm currently forward deployed myself...I got the same bike on 26AUG10 and love it. I went with the Fullsac x-pipe and Rinehart's new 4" slip ons. I had RH True Duals on my 08 FLHR and loved them, but nothing compares to Fullsac's headers...tremendous performance and the new RH 4" slip-ons combined with the x-pipe have a fantastic sound...like a Harley crossbred with a stock car with a deep rumble. SERT and good Dyno pulls brought my torque to 109 for great grunt power.

If you like the stock appearance you will retain the look with fullsac or Jackpot s/s headers as these both use OE heat shields these are the way to go for power and sound without changing the external appearance .. A big plus in California with all the new rules coming up . I installed the Fullsac 2.0 cores in my mufflers and sounds great next step is to fix the hot right leg ..lol

Definately recommend the fullsac x pipe. Then go with whatever slip-ons you prefer. For a little extra $$$ you can have Steve @ fullsac send you the TTS tuner and he'll answer ANY questions you might have and email you a specific dyno proven program for your setup at no extra charge. This way you don't see the x pipe because the stock heat shields hide it, and if you do any future mods you can reprogram the TTS tuner at no charge. Makes sense to me!

I kept the stock headers on my '11 SERGU, but had my dealer remove the CAT.  (They charged me $90 to do that; much cheaper than a new set of header pipes and keeps the stock look.)  I'm using Klock Werks Revolver slip ons and love the looks and sound they produce.   On my '10 SESG, I put the Vance and Hines Power duals and Basic Slip on mufflers.  Those are the only mods I did to the exhaust/engine and am very happy with the performance on both.  I got a chance to hear the V&H Monster Rounds this weekend and they have a really nice sound to them and they would fill the cutouts on the SESG nicely.

i too like true duals and i wasn't crazy about the stock header looks.  so i went with V&H True Duals because they look much better in my opinion.  i also went with the True Duals to eliminate the Cats.  i then went with the V&H Hi Outputs because of the huge tips that fill the opening and you gotta hear these things........deepest rumble i've ever heard.  these absolutely kill the Rineharts on my 07' that in my opinion, were fluttery.  now in the interest of full disclosure, we put a 2 into 1 Rinehart on after all the work was done.  my dealer remapped it and the 2 into 1 did produce 7hp more.  but i'm a believer that i can get the power back in other areas and i will not compromise looks and tone for 7hp.  this will also, when tuned to breathe better, run cooler.  once you get yours you'll understand.  the rear pipe is so close to your leg that you REALLY feel it stock.  since all the work on mine has been done, i don't even notice it anymore.

also note that i worked my heads, went with hi compression pistons, supertuner and TR-590 cams as well as the headers, slip-ons and tune.
