Rinehart Crossback Pipes Installation
« on: February 28, 2011, 09:49:29 AM »

Just picked up a set of Rinehart Crossback pipes for my 08 Springer. Planning on ordering a SERT next.  Trying to decide whether to attempt the install myself.  Any advice or information on the install would be appreciated.  How difficult is it?  What are the steps?  Planning on a custom dyno mapping afterwards.

Not bad at all if you are mechanically inclined ,use new exhaust gaskets ... careful with the o2 sensors...

Took longer to pull the stock exhaust off than to mount the Crossbacks.  Lovin the sound and the look.

Great looking pipes. I want to put a set of these "chrome" on my 08. Where did you order your's from and can you provide the part number. I want to get the chrome ones like you have and the rinehart site is kind of confusing as to the part numbers. Thanks  GIL

I got them NOS off eBay, part number 1800-0566.  I believe the new Rinehart part number is 400-0100.

Those pipes are really nice looking.  I am probably going to ditch the Big Radius next year and get something new.  I will certainly be taking a long look at these... I want a good compromise between power, looks, and sound... (just like everyone else!)

Is anyone running Bassani on their Springer?  Which exhaust seems to provide the most power?

I've been looking at the crossbacks and called cycle solutions tonight. He said that the crossbacks make the best power. He's had allot of experience with allot of pipes so I assume he knows what he's talking about.

I'll probably run the slip ons for the rest of the year and put these on in the spring.

Just got off the phone with Rinehart and they told me that the crossbacks will no longer fit on my 09 Springer because they changed the design when they changed suppliers.

Does anyone know the part number of the older ones that fit the 09's or tried the newer crossbacks to see if they fit?

When I have read about pipes that specifically make power the top performers are all 2 into 1.  The next highest style is the 2 into 2, they look like duals but have an X under the covers.  Then pretty much a crap shoot after that.  the shorter the pipes usually the least amount of resistance.  Not really a good thing for a Twin that is designed to have high torque.  If you are chasing HP numbers at high RPM then you will need more than pipes anyways.

I had V&H Big Radius on my Night Train and all they did was make lots of noise and with the V&H Fuel Pack waste lots of fuel.
I run Drag Specialties (made by V&H) Python Staggered Duals on om 09 SE Springer.  They have the X in them.  I noticed right away that the bike ran smother than the Night Train did and had better throttle responce than the stock pipes.  But they had a chitty RING at cruising range.  I added the V&H Quiet Baffles and now they sound nice and throaty at idle but scream when give it some throttle.  I need to hit the Dyno....some day.  So I do not know what power I am making but I use the Power Commander V with the Auto Tune.  I changed the AFR to run about 13.8:1 and have plenty of power fully loaded down with travel bags and wife to run 65 up the mountains in 6th gear.  I only get about 40 MPG but what do you expect from a 110ci motor with a heavy throttle hand.  some day I will get the bike custom tuned with several maps to save on my computer.  Tour and performance.

My point is, if you want power run a 2 into 1 pipe that is tunable.  If you want looks run whatever you like the looks of.  If you want something in between look for something with an X in it.  REAL POWER is going to come from tuning and engine performance parts.  Personally I like being able to change out baffles to adjust the sound for what I like.

Like everything else it is a personal preference.

Zinister,if you have not seen the pics of our bike or maybe you have, the 17th page of the springer section the topic dated October,21 2008 has a nice picture of the Crossbacks on it.I just called Silver Eagle in Waterloo and he was trying to get ahold of Rhinehart which is in Traer,Iowa to confirm about design change. He said the part number he had fits all softail models till 2011? They have 20% off parts and 10% off labor this month and free pickup and delivery within 75 miles of the dealership. Also read here it would not need a dyno with the PC-V cause it was self tuning or something?Still learning.Seen both the yellow 09 and the blue 09 around here this summer.

I've go an 09 and I have several pictures of the crossbacks on my bike nut I was rattled by Rinehart.

When do you get your pipes on? If they fit I will have them on by spring.

TLC.  Technically you do not have to dyno with the PC-V.  If you have get the Auto Tune with it then you can make adjustments yourself.  However, even though I have both and have not hit the dyno for a custom tune I will be in the future.  It is always better to get a custom tune by a tuner who knows what they are doing.  The PC-V allows settings based on what gear you are in.  Economy for 6th and performance for 1 through 5 for instance.  Can't set that up withought a dyno run or getting a tune from someone who already had it done on theres.  Not a good idea to use others tune unless you have the same equipment, ride at similar altitude/temp, and trust the tuner he used.

The PC-V tunes that you download from the site are a little too rich.  Makes the bike nice balls out but pops a little when decelerating and your milage will go to chit.  Mine went to 30 MPG with the only tune they had that was close to what I had (103 with V&H short shots).  I worked it out with the auto tune and get about 40-42 MPG now with no popping in decel and runs great at all RPM.
