Add me to the list of folks who think Mapsource stinks!

Downloading Microsoft Streets and Trip Trial version.  Large file!  1.22GB.

I agree with this... I think the problem some may be encountering when the GPS unit itself is "recalculating" (changing) the route when it is loaded is because the route in Mapsource has been created on a different version map then is in the GPS. The GPS itself will only have one mapset (most current update you've done) however Mapsource will have all the versions of maps that you have installed/updated. If you inadvertently use an older map to create your route when you load it into the GPS you stand a chance of it "recalculating" the route.

What I do to eliminate this is after updating and confirming the update has been successfully loaded in both GPS and Mapsource is I delete the older maps. This way when I open Mapsource I don't stand the chance of creating a route on an older version map then what is in my GPS. You can delete the older maps by going to control panel > add/remove software and delete the older versions. Deleting the older versions will also create more space on your hard drive.

Following the procedure I've just described I've never encountered a route created on Mapsource being "recalculated" when I load it into my GPS.

Hey D00d, how do you delete previous maps?
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add Remove Programs. I'm not on the computer w/Mapsource (maps) but if memory serves me correctly they will be "City Navigator..." Before you start deleting make sure you know which one is your newest (it will match up to the one on your GPS) and delete all the old ones.

MapSource is a clunky, user unfriendly program. I agree with all the above complaints. I'll take a look at Base Camp. Is it a hiking program?

Hey D00d, how do you delete previous maps?
Back on computer w/Mapsource and will provide some pictures to help explain. I currently have one old set of maps still on my computer so I can show you what it will look like when you get to Add/Remove Programs see picture below...

Not that it really matters anymore in the world of Terabyte HD but the size of the file is 1,820.00 MB (almost 2GB).

Now when I open Mapsource you'll see it will show two different mapsets in the dropdown window (see below). I currently have City Navigator NT 2010.40 on my GPS and if I inadvertently created a map using City Navigator NT 2010.30 it might cause some recalculations when I send it to my GPS.

If you are unsure which mapset you have loaded on your GPS you can check by going to Wrench > Map > Map Info.

Not trying to offend anyone but Mapsource is the ultimate navigation program.

You have to put the effort into learning it.  Once you do your trips are easy.  No need for any paper maps.  We have done 3000 mile rides with nothing but the GPS & Mapsource.  I never carry paper, ever.  Nothing comes easy with technology, you get out of it what you put into learning it.

I have attached my route for last Oct NorCal/SoCal Meet in the Middle Ride as a sample of what can be done.  Broken up by the day (the only reasonable way to do it).  It is the NT2011 version.  It is easy once you spend the time to understand the basics of it.  You can't learn it without reading the instructions ( I know guys don't do that) but you must.

It's no different than learning to use TTS.

It will be a shame if Garmin does away with it as it is the best GPS program on the market today.

Just sayin.......  :nixweiss:

I agree.  It is not the program but the operator of the program.

Nice job, but what is the advantage to having multiple routes in one file? I usually create one route and save as a separate file. Do combining a bunch of them, say all of the various Sturgis Tour routes in one file offer an advantage?  Thanks!

Will these maps download into the GPS without any major changes. I spoke with a Garmin Tech and he said only Mapsource will work. I'm sure he wouldn't tell me anything but the truth....lol
