It was cold and windy, so I didn't spend a lot of time with this one.
When I finally get around to teaching my self a little photoshop maybe I'll add one of the big moons.

You guys are taking some great pics with some expensive equipment. Until June of 2010 I was still stuck old school using 35mm film. Well Circuit City was "going out of business" so I fought thru the crowds and got a good deal on a Nikon D80 w/18-135mm VR and I also got a 55-200mm VR f/4.5 for my birthday. Man I have a lot to learn, the D80 is smarter than me and can do a lot more things than I know how to do. I have read the manual and the Nikon book "How to"(forgot the name) several times. I am getting better. Oh I also bought some UV filters. I have been taking it on our rode trips but not wearing it around my neck.
I have a question:If I was only going to buy one "photoshop/software" tool what should it be? I pretty much have just been downloading my pics and going with them however they come out. I enjoy this topic even thou sometimes it is over my head. Thanks for the info.
Crusty the pic of your yellow bike really POPS!
Edit:Just read OP again, Crusty, you have three different software programs that you use to edit pics? Do you use all three each time? Sorry for the dumb questions.

i would recommend adobe lightroom 3, it not only edits multiple brands but is a very strong cataloging program.  The Nikon products are very good but unliked by many. for critical editing i use Nikon Nx
much easier to use than layers in photoshop
cheers mike

I don't have a lot of experience, but I'd agree, if I had 1 program to post process with LR3 seems to be a great all around program. Its ability to reduce noise in high ISO shots is amazing!

Photomatix is only for merging bracketed shots into HDR images (or manipulating a single file). That is what really sets my bike shots apart, drawing the different light levels into a single image.

I was going to get rid of my D80 when I got my D300s, but being the rookie I am, I am still very intimidated at taking "routine" shots with my D300, while I enjoy learning how to make the camera work for me, I'll admit, sometimes in a rush, it is comforting to be able to set the D80 to auto and trust you'll get a good image you can work with. I'm just not educated/experienced enough to trust myself to put together a good shot in a pinch, trying to remember all the settings to adjust.

LR 3 would be the generic program to give you the most band for your buck.  The D80 had some problems, but nothing that cannot be overcome by some knowledge of how the metering system works....you just have to compensate a bit with the D80...the D300 can be a point and shoot, if you want.

I use my D-60 as a point and shoot more often than not.  I wear it around my neck while riding and take many picks on the fly at 80 mph.

We rode about 600 miles today and I took a few shots of the mountains down here in Ariz. as the sun was setting this evening.  But have to wait till I get home.  I don't have the ability to down load them with this HP Mini laptop. :nixweiss:

I'm technology challenged all the way around.....photograpy, computers, phones.....it doesn't matter, I'm at the back of the class. :nervous:

Enjoy the D200, it was my favorite Nikon, mine was stolen so i upgraded to the D300 then D3s. Got more useable pictures straight out of the D200 then the others. the upgrades forced me to take some classes and go on some of Popular Photography Mentor series workshops, great excuse for a bike trip.
cheers

Thought it might be fun/interesting to post a few pics that we've taken, with the shooting information, just to see some stuff that is not motorcycle related.

Here's an old cabin in Cades Cove, Great Smoky Mountain National Park.  Shot Jan '10, Nikon D300, Nikon 16-85VR @16mm, F/13, 1/13th shutter speed, Gitzo CF Tripod w/Acratech G2 Ballhead.  Tweaked in NX2.

Terry - did you change any of the processing settings e.g. "vivid" or "standard"?

Most of my RAW settings for the camera have the saturation bumped up slightly...NX2 is the only software that reads the settings from the camera.  I shot Velvia film for a long time, so for most outdoor things, I bump the saturation a bit, either in camera, in PP, or both.

I'm still trying to find the happy medium for the saturation with both the D300 and 7000
+1 doesn't seem to be enough and +2 is too much for my liking.
