fullsac x-pipe install
« on: March 17, 2011, 08:34:11 PM »

Please forgive my stupidness, I can't find this on the site, though I know it's here somewhere. The little round fiber thingies that come with the x-pipe, how and where do they go? Are they really needed? Directions to the install photos would be mucho appreciated!!

Are you talking about the 2 round gaskets that go on the exhaust port between the head and the pipe?? Check on your heads, the old ones may still be in there.

I would if I already had them. To preclude exhaust leaks as the old ones have probably collapsed some.

jls1098, when you reinsall your head pipes and mufflers leave everything kind of loose at first then tighten the exhaust gasket studs a little bit at a time alternating from the front pipe to rear pipe and so on. ( it gives a detailed explanation of this in the HD service manuel.)  Then snug down the rest of the system. I followed their method and did not have any exhaust leaks. I used the stock exhaust gaskets in the cylinder heads ( new ones) they are very difficult to get in. You need to lube the exhaust port and the gasket with WD 40 or something slippery or they tend to want to tweak out of shape.I gently installed them with my fingers and it was time consuming. JIM's actually makes a tool for this if you get desperate, but for a one time thing fingers and patience work just fine. I haven't seen the ones from Fulsac, but maybe they go in easier.  Luckily I had an extra one on hand since I was a little impatient with the first one and bent it. I think maybe the ones that are smaller like the Screamin Eagle Versions may be easier to install. Good Luck CAHDBIKER

You may have to "dig" out the old ones with a small bladed screwdriver, but get 'em out and put the new ones in.  If you don't, and have a leak, you'll cuss yourself a thousand times while disassembling everything all over again.

Thanks Guys, Followed most of your advice. Just taking a break after removing the old (1500 mi.)baffles. Bought these cheap little diamond grinding wheels a Harbor
Freight, didn't think they would work to grind off the welds. Put one on my roto-zip and they worked GREAT. Let you all know how things turn out.

WOO HOO!!!!! Did it it's done ( with much help from the resident computer Guru, ie. wife,) Did I mention I also wraped the x-pipe? Any way.......... First; the 1&3/4's are louder than I thought, but have a very deep rumble, very Harley sounding. A short ride ,5 mi., opinion... NICE.... 6 gear roll on has more umph. Sunday, a long ride I'll let you all know. ;D

The 1 3/4" baffles are a nice compromise. Not too loud...not too quiet. I've had them for close to a year and the noise level is fine. I have never heard a complaint from the ultimate critic...my wife.  ;)

Final Update, 2011 FLTRUSE Rio Red w/ 1600 mi. Fullsac stage I, 1 3/4 baffles,,,,,,,,,,,,150 mi. ride today on a beautiful spring day in southwest New Mexico. No more stumble like stock, just solid power through the gears. The sound, while a little bit louder than I would prefer is very deep and with out a doubt HARLEY!!! I do have to crank up the iPod (how yuppy can we get) but still audible at interstate 10 (80+mph) speeds. For some reason the heat, on the right side, is still very noticeble. Keeping the lowers vents closed works better than when open.??!?!?! Oh by the way I also wrapped the exhaust. It will be interesting come summers heat!!!!!!!!!!!!  The seat of the pants feel and the rumble make the fullsac worth the price..

Jls...you said you did the Stage 1; including the tts?  That should have gotten alot of the heat out. And how much louder than stock?  Lots, or some?  I know it's all subjective, based on personal opinions.

Yes, with the TTS. As you said subjective to both the heat and volume of the  exhaust. There does not seem to be any air flow around or behind the rear cylinder, especially with the lowers vents open. Strange, but I held my hand in that area (@ 80 mph) not much air flow and very warm. I think it is noticeably louder. For me just short of to loud, but to me it sounds much like many of the Harley's I've owned in the past, very deep rumble, think shovelhead with glass packed pipes. I'll need more miles to decide conclusively but I'm really enjoying the sound/umph factor. maybe I'm having flashbacks to my yout.

FWIW: some have noticed rust forming quicker on their exhaust with exhaust wrap. You will probably be ok, it doesn't rain there much, right?
I had mine wrapped for some time, didn't notice any difference and took it back off.
I have a spare pipe here I'm going to try some metal spray on, just because all my hot rod stuff done that way and am happy with the results. :nixweiss:
