Air Breather for 110
« on: March 19, 2011, 08:24:23 PM »

Thinkin' bout a new air breather for my convertible but would it be worth it?
How much difference would Harley part #29253-0508A make or is there a better option out there?
How much would it improve performance & gas mileage?

Thanks,

There's nothing wrong with the stock air cleaner, which is the Ventilator from the SE catalog.  It is already a high flow unit compared to the standard black plastic airbox on regular models.

That part number you listed doesn't look like a valid part number.  Can you clarify what you are considering as a replacement?

Jerry,

My mistake the part is #29253-08A
Screamin Eagle Heavy Breather Performance Air Cleaner.

From information posted by other people on the site, the Heavy Breather won't make a significant difference in performance over the Ventilator, so the choice really comes down to looks more than performance.  I personally prefer the look of the Ventilator, but to each his own.

I did see a definitive increase on my '08FLHR after upgrading from a stock AC, however you would only be doing this for the COOL factor on a CVO (and they do look Very Cool IMO). Although zero increase should be expected when compared to the Ventilator.

How about the Zippers maxflow compared to the Ventilator?  I replaced the Ventilator with the Zippers unit but wonder whether the performance gain was worth the sacrifice in looks.

Researched it but couldn't come up with good cfm comparison data.  Went with my builder's recommendation.  Interested in the group's thoughts.

IMHO
It come down to the amount of exposed filter media and the backplate.

Other metrics such as designed turbulence or lack thereof may come into play; Zippers seems to believe in laminar flow. I personally subscribe to the reasoning behind why one doesn't want a mirror polish in your heads...

I believe I read on the board that the HB may, due to being a 90 degree elbow, feed a tad more air to the back cylinder but I don't know if anyone ever substantiated that statement. I suppose someone with TTS could pony up info from their Vtune data and compare tables, front to back.
