2001 windshield
« on: April 02, 2011, 07:44:27 PM »

I need a new windshield for the Black 2001 SERG I got last month.
I think I've narrowed it down to the HD Wind Splitter or the Klock Werks Flare.
I am 6'2'' so was going to go with the 12 inch smoked model.
Is one any better then other in function or appearance?
Is there other options better then the two I mentioned?
Thanks,
Jerry

Hi Jerry,

There are several threads here about windshields.  Try using the search function if you have not already.  The choice seems to be pretty subjective.  Are you looking for style or comfort?  I don't think you will get very much protection from either of your choices.  I had the 12" KW.  It seemed to direct the wind right past my ears, resulting in a lot of wind noise.  I am 5'11".  After several tries, the 14" Cee Bailey's worked best for me.  Clearview is also popular.  Good luck!

Thanks GK,
I did a search and it sounds like I need a taller windshield that I originally thought. The 8 or 12 inch would look cool but not very functional. I'll check out the Clear view & Cee Baileys.

Cee Bailey's 14" works well for me.  I'm 6'3".  They're also good gys to work with.

at 6.2" i am using the KW 8 smoked and KW 12 clear at the winter.
if the mood strikes, i go with the stock one to (looks bad a## lol) im also using the Lepera long legs which drops me about 2 inch lower. the 2 options works fine for me. if your looking for something that looks cool and works great KW flare is the one for you...

Thanks FL54, I called Cee Baileys and they were very helpful. I measured my current windshield per their directions and it looks like I need the 15 inch. What color is your's? I want to get dark smoked. Will that be too dark?
Their chart states that most riders 6'1" to 6'3" use the 17 inch. That seems way too tall.

Bunkerbeer, thanks for your recommendations on the Klock Werks. Is your 12 inch measured from top to bottom of windshield or vertically?

I got the 15 inch dark grey.  I'm 6'3" and I look over the top of the windshield.
I think the concern is that if the windshield is too tall (you look through it) and you have the darker tint, you won't be able to see road hazards well at night.
I live in Central Oregon and it's currently snowing so I haven't taken any extended trips and I haven't ridden at night.
I'm not too concerned because I look over it.
The folks at Cee Bailey's said that if I didn't like it AND didn't clean it, I could exchange it.
Hope that helps

Thanks everyone.  I am really trying take advantage of everyones experience and select the right windshield. I think I have settled in on the 15 inch Cee Baileys but can't decide if I should get the light or dark tint.
I really want the dark tint but my concern is that, even though I will be looking over it, the  dark tint may be to hazzardest at night.
Should I worry about that? Does anyone have a tall dark tint that give me some advice?
Thanks

I've been using a CeeBailey for about a year now and like Greg said its very annoying around the ears, but does a good job with wind buffeting on top of the helmet and looks great. At AZ Bike Week I stopped off at the ClearView booth and they let me try the tall, medium, and stock heights. I'm 5'10" and settled on the stock look over height. I have to say its the best windshield I've had and I'm definitely done looking after a half dozen tries.  Doc

It's snowing again in C.O. so I don't know when I'll get out again.  I've never had a KW windshield so I can't speak from personal experience, but I've heard that the sun reflection off the silver dash can be distracting.  Like having mail up on your dashboard on a bright sunny day.
You need another consideration like a hole in the head but maybe some other members with KW shields can confirm or deny.

Grandpadoc, on the Clearview, did you get the "recurve" or vent system?

My Harley dealer is pushing their "wind splitter" wind shield. Any one have experience with it?

I got the recurve with the optional vent and don't know much about the wind splitter. The CV did as well as the see through shields on the bikes next to me. Bubba Love talked me into switching from the CeeBailey to my old tall shield for the ride home on the RG he was riding. As you can see the CV is slanted back closer to the rider and the recurve makes it function like a tall shield. Doc

How do like the "vent"? do you use it much?
CV states that it balances the pressure on both sides of the wind shield to lessen noise.

Thanks, The picture you posted was very helpful.

I used the tall windshield on the way out to AZ and Bubba used my CB (long story). When we got to the AZ border we took our helmets off and his baseball cap wouldn't stay on and the wind noise was annoying. The tall shield I was using worked great for wind noise and my hat stayed on without a problem. I'm pretty sensitive to wind burn and with the CB I always have to wear a 3/4 helmet with a shield to be comfortable on a long trip or put on the tall windshield. This trip when I purchased the CV at Bike Week we changed out the CB for my old tall shield on Bubba's bike for the trip back. Bubba was happy and I was very happy that the CV performed well in the wind protection and I could hear my radio well. The six hour trip back let me play with the vent and the air can be directed anywhere you need it and I preferred it to be open except when it got cold near the coast.
I did find myself in a more upright riding position to look over the CV to avoid the distorsion in the recurve, but later got used to it and didn't matter anymore. The tall winshield had no distorsions, but doesn't look like it belongs on the RG so I would always switch from the CB to the tall shield for short and long trips. Now I'm just going to leave the CV on cause it looks right and performs great and with the foam insulation at the base it doesn't rattle and squeak like the other shields. This is my sixth and definitely my last shield.  ::)  Doc
