Ceramic or Powder coating a chrome pipe
« on: April 07, 2011, 01:17:30 PM »

Can you powdercoat over a pipe that is already chromed?
Does the chrome have to be removed?
What is the difference between powdercoating a pipe and ceramic coating a pipe.
If your trying to keep the heat in which process is better?

Ceramic coating is more of an insulator than powdercoat. I'm not sure if you can ceramic coat over chrome

I just bought black heat shields and a black muffler.  Now I can switch when I get bored and want a different look!

Chip, call Jet Hot Coatings and they can advise.  I had my D&D Fat Cat headpipe ceramic coated last summer.  They told me they might have to strip the chrome ($50 charge I think).  But in the end they did not have to do so.  But the chrome on the headpipe is not really good quality anyway since it is covered by the highly chromed heat shield.

Powder coating normally requires a porous surface finish from either sandblasting or chemical treatment as in iron phosphatizing. Powder coating to chrome would probably come off in sheets due to poor adhesion and variation in temperature from ambient to operating temperatures.

Also note there are two types of powder coat: thermo-set (fixed) and thermo-plastic which can be reheated and reformed, most cure in the 400 - 500 F range so any temp on your pipe in that range with thermo-plastic might distort or deform the finish.

As mjb indicates ceramic is an insulator while most powdercoating is not. It is my understanding that ceramic is used on racing pipes to maintain a consistent temp.

Plating is a different story entirely, I believe that many black pipes are zinc oxide plated which is a chemical conversion of the surface and not a paint.

Coating did not help with the heat but the temperature transfer increased on my D&D fc with qpb, may be better perceived scavenging due to temperature moving away. Looks bitchin behind the heat shields anyways though.

Jet hot did it the work for I dunno(2 n change) hunnert dahlas.

Remember, temperature is an intensive property, while heat is an extensive property.

Yesterday I had Rush headers put on my wife's trike.  The headers are ceramic coated on the inside and on the outside.....Chrome Shields are installed over the headers.  The Headers are a lot cooler than the standard.  Will try it as it gets warmer...if in fact they do work, I'll put the Rush Head Pipes on my SE Ultra to try to cool it down!!

My D&D fat cats are ceramic coated inside and out. As mentioned they will charge extra fo rstripping chrome. I also recall mine did not need the extensive stripping.

As for heat reduction - I say BS

I opted for the "silver" finish.
Advantage - the color stays consistent along the pipe, no blue-yellow purple tints"
disadvantage - the pipes always look like dirty chrome, but at least they are the same wherever viable.

Had a set of pipes powder coated black. Didn't strip off chrome first.  It lasted for awhile then started to flake off around the first 6-8 inches from the exhaust ports.  I don't know if it was because of the existing chrome or heat or maybe just a poor powdercoat job.  I couldn't complain as it was done free by a friend in the business.

Chances are it was from the heat, ceramic or Jet coat is the way to go.

Yes, as porthole mentioned.. there's an internal coating available.
This is the best way to keep the heat inside the pipe.

I agree. I've had 3-4 sets of headpipes ceramic coated and it's just as hot. I'll never do it again. Waste of money.

Heat claims are overly optimistic from my experience. I used Jet Hot .... pipes look great however!
