Rokker Speakers vrs 7.25s
« on: April 07, 2011, 02:16:12 PM »

Does anyone know the difference between the Rokker Speakers (without the amp) and the 7.25s that J&M has?  I don't want to drop $700 in a set of speakers and amp but I do want better sound than the stock units put out.  Too many choices these days!

Google Rokker 7.25 speakers and on a couple of different forums, they are comparing the new features of the Rokker speakers compared to the previous J & M 7.25s. They also have the new 500 amp for the Batwings from Dr.V Twin for $599.95, I'm ordering a set of Rokkers ($299.95) and a 250 watt amp ($349.95) from Dr. V Twin for my SERG, enough is enough!lol. :drink:

Here's what I've been able to ferret out so far.

The New 7.25" has voice coil holes that is supposed to help cooling that bumps the wattage capacity from approx 140 to 170. Also, the hidden basket/frame is now blue instead of black.

New - http://www.jmcorp.com/ProductDetail.asp?ProductID=HCRK-7252GTM-T&PF=45
Old - http://www.jmcorp.com/ProductDetail.asp?ProductID=HCUS-7252GTM-B&PF=43

The New 5.25" are exactly the same but have a titanium colored tweeter for $10 more with the same 140w rating.

New - http://www.jmcorp.com/ProductDetail.asp?ProductID=HURK-5252GTM-T&PF=45
Old - http://www.jmcorp.com/ProductDetail.asp?ProductID=HCUR-5252GTM-B&PF=43

I guess the party line is, if you have last years 7.25"/5.25" it's not worth the upgrade, especially in the rear where they are exactly the same except for the colored tweeter. Even with the new 500w amp, the old speakers are fine and you won't hear a difference. The only thing is, the new 7.25" could potentially last longer, if you tend to leave your system cranked all the time.

Perhaps Sean will chime in with more indepth details, and a nice CVO discount!

mrmagloo ,,,,,

Spec’d at 2 ohms impedance and 170+ watts max power, these new ROKKER series speakers from J&M provide the ultimate in bass response, extended mid/high frequency range and raw audio power.

Features of the new ROKKER series speaker kits from J&M are:

** Waterproof injection-molded polycarbonate woofer cone.

** High-flux strength but lite-weight dual-donut Neodymium magnet.

** High efficiency VENTED voice-coil for improved cooling when operating at high volume levels for extended periods.

** Custom designed grillwork with high-output titanium-colored tweeter and midrange drivers.

** Specially-tuned speaker-mounted passive crossover network for improved fidelity & frequency response.

In addition, with the new ROKKERs you can turn the gain controls a little higher on the J&M high-power amplifiers, and at that level, they are even more impressive ,,,,

Absolutely THE best performance I have ever heard on my own Harley motorcycles ,,,,

Thanks John - I was hoping you'd eventually pop in one day.

Couple of quick questions.

1.  There's been an awful lot of concern over fitting that new 500W 4 ch amp in the batwing.  The few who have tried have reported that's it's been a bit of a bear getting everything to fit nicely. Can you offer any indepth tips and perhaps some photos of a batwing install on these CVO's which have pretty full fairings already.

2.  As you might know, I have last years 7.25" and 5.25" in my '05 SEUC. While I'm happy, I'm always looking for more.  The one thing I did notice is, which dovetails your comments was, I'm not sure the bass response extended all that greatly.  It's definitely clearer and louder, but I just didn't note much in the bass dept.

After reseaching this a bit while in the middle on contemplating the HD Rear Port kit, I found that the A-Version of the HD HO amp doesn't allow frequency range to be adjusted lower, meaning the amp is physically preventing the lower lows you speak of.

As such, does your amps use the stock amp with high level inputs, or do they bypass the amp. Naturally I'm trying to define this situation with the frequency range, as if you are using the stock HO - A amp, that's going minimize the potential beneifts with the lows.  And the only option to combat this, you'd need to upgrade to the B-Version of the HD HO amp, which will add another $499 to the budget.

Can you please speak to this and offer your thoughts.

Thanks!

mrmagloo ,,,,

At our install tradeshows, I have helped our guys install these new 500w 4-ch amps, and the most significant tip I can give is to NOT be in a hurry, and make sure that you methodically move many of the plugs and wire bundles outside the vertical supports inside the fairing, on either side of the radio ,,,,,

this often requires the removal of a couple of gauge assemblies, to get the large factory wiring plugs to the outsides of these supports ,,,,, then do NOT pile a bunch of cables on top of the amp ,,,, and make sure to tidy up all wires and bundles neatly before trying to put the fairing shell back on ,,,,

there is a decent photo of this at http://www.jmcorp.com/ProductDetail.asp?ProductID=JAMP-500HC06-UL&PF=45 ,,,,

Bass response with the new ROKKER series 7.25's is better than the standard J&M 7.25's, but still not up to 10" subwoofer standards, ((the fairing is not exactly a specially built sealed subwoofer box)) ,,,

Having said that, they are still easily THE best sounding speakers you can install in the Harley fairing ,,, especially at speed, with a good amplifier driving them ,,,,,,

,,,,, and that is another one of the main advantages of the new ROKKER series speakers from J&M, is the ability to turn the gains up on the J&M amplifiers a bit more and really extend the sound and performance envelope ,,,,

I have played around quite a bit with the bass boost and crossover frequency adjustments on the J&M amps, with little success ,,,,, booomy bass is just not going to come out of the Harley fairing ,,,,,,

Now we are looking at a new type of tail trunk from JOHN SHOPE'S SINISTER INDUSTRIES, which we can mount a 10” dedicated subwoofer into ,,, then possibly take the rear channels off of our 500w 4-ch amp, bridge them together, and make it really thump ,,,,, but we are just at the beginning stages of that idea ,,,,

John,

What experience if any do you have with a new 2011 SESG with the factory 6 speakers and 100 watt a channel amp? I know there is a lot of people on here that want to upgrade that system. Have you personally done any systems on the 2011 SESG? How about recommendations of just speaker upgrades and what to expect and on a full system upgrade and what to expect. Or maybe the speakers are OK and it is the factory amp that suck??

Thanks!!

fast380 ,,,,,

you can just replace the Harley speakers in your 2011 CVO StreetGlide, both upper and lower, with the J&M 7.25" ROKKER series ,,,, and do a little wire connector splicing to replace Harley funny looking new speaker plugs ,,,,,

OR ,,, you can remove completely the Harley fairing mounted amp ((it is right on top of the Harley HK radio in your fairing)) and wiring ,,,,, install the J&M 500w 4-channel amp (Part# JAMP-500HC06-SG) http://www.jmcorp.com/ProductDetail.asp?ProductID=JAMP-500HC06-SG&PF=45,,,, ((relocate your MP3 player module under the new J&M amp, into the custom SS bracket)) and then install the new J&M ROKKER series 7.25" speakers for the UPPER and LOWER fairing positions, and connect them to the new J&M amp ,,,,,,,

the factory installed TWEETERS on the 2011 CVO StreetGlide, are then connected in parallel with the 7.25" ROKKER fairing speaker wires ,,,, so they will all play at the proper volume ,,,,,, and it will be one of the most awesome sounding audio systems you have ever heard on a Harley ,,,,,

if you also install the J&M light rings, both upper and lower, and switch them all to red, to match your fairing gauges, the look at night, will be as awesome as the sound ,,,,,,

Thanks for the input John. Sounds like starting with the speakers and then adding the amp later may be the way to go. I read on another thread that somebody had to add a 1ohm resister to the factory tweeter to make it play at the same level as their speakers, your opinion? What impedance are the 7.25 speakers?

John
This is great that you are getting out the word for those "2011 SESG2" who wish to do something with the HD stock audio system.  Since you are commenting on the "stock" system maybe you could make a recommendation for those who are putting a removeable tour pak on their SESG2.  I have a SESG2, which I have added the  XM module too, and the necessary wiring harness to the rear of the bike for tour pak speakers.... I want a system that utilizes all existing speaker positions and adds the two speakers on the tour pak..... any good recommendations>
Thanks

John

Are the lower fairing speakers a drop in for the stock 2011 CVO SG speakers or do I need the housing shown with them ? I'd like to avoid painting something to match the existing lowers.

Thanks

Hey John -

How are the rear inputs provided on the 4-channel amp given that the SESG2 only has front outputs from the H/K unit?
Additionally, wouldn't wiring the 1ohm factory tweeters in parallel with the 2ohm ROKKER fairing speakers drop the total load to below 2ohms as rated stable by the ROKKER amp?

JMJOHN, are you going to supply the adapters necessary for connecting the fairing and fairing lowers speakers to the OEM speaker wiring?  Unlike other models that use standard spade connectors, the SESG2 uses sealed connectors.  Biketronics is supplying adapters for use with the Hertz speakers they sell; they're shown in reply 171 in this thread:
