Possible Tach/Panacea Problem(reads Low)???
« on: April 29, 2006, 08:36:21 PM »

On my 2004 SEEG, I noticed that at times after riding a while my tach would read way low.  Shut down the bike and start it up a few minutes later and it would be fine for a while.  Then the problem reoccurs  For example, at idle, the TACH would read 400 when it was revving normal....800-1000.  At highway speeds, it would read low also at different speeds...like 2600 when it should have been 3000.  Overall, it seems to run 400-600 low.

Well, on the new 2006, while riding today, guess what I observed for the first time...the exact same phenomena!  The bike is still stock, sadly, except for one thing, last week, I installed the Panacea system on the new 2006....the exact same system that I had installed on the SEEG!

So, I believe that it is somehow related.

Do any other Panacea owners see this issue?

I have the following Kuryakyn p/ns installed:
4833 smoked laydown tailight plus the included load balancer
4949 rear turn signals
4825 front turn signals plus load balancer in parallel with main one

I only have the smoked laydown tailight and load balancer.  No problems with my tach.

Have you heard anything from them yet on the Tach issue? 8-)

I've got the Panacea brake light and rear turn signals.  I too had a problem with the tach reading way low one time.  Like you, after stopping for lunch and re-starting the bike the tach was fine from then on.  Makes you wonder.

Thanks ultrafxr!

Kuryakyn has returned my e-mail.  they wanted me to remove the system and test the base setup again.  I had done this sunday before riding most of the day without the low tach readings to confirm my theory.  He wants me to remove the front and test again...but if you are not running the fronts then their may be no change and the tach will read low after a couple hours of riding.

Is it receiving feedback via the ground connection?  Very odd...  :o

I agree, it is odd, but I am more convinced than ever that the two are related and further, since it takes time to manifest itself could it be a heat buildup with the load balancer affecting its ability to function.

Bill I also have the problem. When it occurs I turned off the bike and restart it and it will be fine for a while. I never thought about the lights and load balancer.

Thanks DAWG...adding a poll since we now have four confirmed cases...

I was in the Dealer Saturday talking to the service guy telling him about the low readings and that the bike is still stock...he said no one else has ever reported the issue and he has not changed a tach in three years.  That got me thinkin' about being jinxed with tachs or whether I have some electro-magnetic field about me causing the problem  since the 2004 had the problem.

While riding after leaving the dealer I remembered that I had just installed the Panacea lights the night before and that's when it hit me that the two must be related.

I have no idea if this is related, but I thought I'd throw out my experience with another Kuryakyn part.  Had their "SmartWire" setup on my Dyna, to convert the rear turn signals to run/stop/turn.  If the bike stalled, or didn't start on the first try, my tach and speedo would act screwy and my brake lights wouldn't work.  If I remembered to shut off the ignition switch, then back on and restart the bike everything was OK.  Since I didn't stall the bike very often, I never really tried to figure out why it had that affect.  You may want to contact Kuryakyn and ask them directly.

Oh yeah...I have had a garmin etrex for years and would bring it with me in the jeep.  One day while listening to music I look at the GPS and notice it lost satellite reception.  Then it was back at some point.  This went on for a while until I realized that I lost the birds when I would be playing a CD in the stock CD player!  DSP can cause havoc...and you wonder why they don't want you using electronics on planes???

Imagine if someone starts using some new/preporoduction whiz bang gizmo on a plane that has not been thoroughly tested.  A few hundred miles northeast of Miami...we would have another Bermuda Triangle Loss possibly!

I still say this is related, Panacea affects Tach...but what is the "mechanics" that could be inducing this reduction in RPMs...displayed?
