No radio in 2012 bikes for first 6 months
« on: April 22, 2011, 12:52:57 AM »

read this today what do you think?
"At Harley-Davidson, our hearts go out to the people of Japan and our community of riders there who have shown great resilience through a very difficult time.

These recent events have had a global impact on businesses including Harley-Davidson. In particular, these events have severely disrupted the supply of electronic components around the world, as 60% of the world’s supply of integrated circuit components are manufactured in Japan.

While Harley-Davidson motorcycles are significantly made up of parts sourced and assembled in the United States, a limited number of small components – like some electronics – are sourced through world-leading suppliers outside of the U.S. For Harley-Davidson, the events in Japan have affected its supply of electronic components that are used in the American made premium audio systems included in select Touring models. The radio components in Electra Glide, Road Glide and Street Glide Touring models will not be available for 2012 models for approximately 6 months."

Looks like someone was screwing with the actual language of the Guidance section from the 19 April SEC quarterly filing.  Link to doc here:

http://investor.harley-davidson.com/secfiling.cfm?filingID=1193125-11-101658

Actual language here:

Guidance

In a move related to what it believes will be a modest level of supply chain interruption to the Company arising from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, Harley-Davidson is widening full-year shipment guidance. The Company now expects to ship 215,000 to 228,000 Harley-Davidson motorcycles to dealers and distributors worldwide in 2011, compared to prior shipment guidance of 221,000 to 228,000 motorcycles.

In the second quarter of 2011, Harley-Davidson expects to ship 62,000 to 67,000 motorcycles.

Harley-Davidson and its direct suppliers source a limited number of components and subcomponents, including motorcycle electronics, through suppliers in Japan, and the Company has several of these subcomponent parts on close watch for possible shortages related to the situation there. The Company has identified a supply issue related to an electronic subcomponent used in radios for its motorcycles that could affect shipment volume, and the Company is adjusting shipment guidance accordingly. Based on currently available information, Harley-Davidson believes it has viable solutions for the radios and other subcomponents on its watch list and the Company continues to work closely with its suppliers to monitor the situation and address issues as necessary.

“We continue to assess our supply chains and as a precaution we have decided to modestly reduce the lower end of shipment guidance following the events in Japan,” said Wandell. “Our hearts go out to all the people of Japan, including our community of riders there. We are thankful for the safety of our employees and dealers in Japan and commend them for their tremendous resilience through this difficult period.”

Radio's are not the only product from Japan that are not being shipped out

Yamaha outboards and Suzuki outboards are back ordered till September for loose motors

Mercury Marine which is in Fond du Lac Wisconsin has plenty of motors but the electronics are produced in Japan. They are doing inventory now to check on the allotments of loose motors.

I know about a dozen people that have sold their motors from their boats and did not expect the Sept wait for new ones

Considering the fact that people have been riding motorcycles without radio's for over a century now, I don't see what the big deal is.  Maybe if Harley converts the hole in the fairing to a fresh air duct they can jack the price up and sell it as a new feature?

BTW, what about the other Japanese stuff on the bikes, like all the front forks?

BTW #2, I figure the Chinese are probably already tooling up to pirate the electronics, if they don't already do so.  So this isn't likely to be a big deal.

Yes and they will not need any lights as well since the bike will give off a glow, it will be visable in the dark.

Harley-Davidson Advisory Panel Survey is where I read this who knows if it is true.

It basically asked if you bought a 2012 and had no display for 6 months was it worth a $500 gift card.

I said know so it then asked if their GPS worth $900 would sweeten the deal.

I told them now was a good time to get another radio supplier as HK radios/sound systems are junk whether they are in HD or a BMW..

Should be an opportunity for an American manufacturer to step in.
