Help with trailer wiring
« on: April 22, 2011, 08:06:53 PM »

My trailer has a standard 4 wire connection

Bike has the Hoppy tail light conversion so only 4 wired are on the pigtail

So it is just like a regular truck/trailer connertion

My question is how can I install a 3rd led tail/brake light on the rear of the trailer

Would I need to wire in a Valley 52180 on the trailer by wiring in the yellow and green wire to the converter and only wire the red outlet wire to the 3rd brake light....cut off the yellow and green output wires

All lights on trailer are LED

Can't.   Third brake light needs a dedicated feed.  Coming after the adapter your brake lights are always shared with turn signal feeds.  If you must have the third brake light you'll have to have one more feed.

I thought that was the objective of this Valley converter so you would not have to run another wire

It is.   For brake light function overlaid on the turn signals.  Third brake light is a stand alone break light though.  Stand alone brake light can't share the turn signal feed.  If it did it's going to blink with either the left or right signal.

Hey Brian; just thought of something.  Does the module you got combine brake light and turn signal functions on a single feed on each side?  Or does it combine tail light and brake light functions and keep turn signals separated?

If the latter you can wire your trailer with a four wire connector and have your third brake light.  If it works that way, however, it'll be one of the several modules out there that controls DC output to the bulb to make the same side of the bulb be either brighter or dimmer for tail light and brake light.  That would mean your third brake light would be both a tail light and a brake light.  And it might mean that if it's an LED there'd be little distinction between the tail light brightness and brake light brightness.  Not all LEDs dim very well.

Ok.  Just looked up the actual module you mentioned.  You're screwed.

Found this image for the Valley 52180.  It sends a shared turn signal and brake light feed to each side.  That's two wires.  One for right and one for left that also each carry brake light to each corner.  Neither of those is always a brake light.

On top of those two wires you'll also have a feed for tail lights and the ground wire.  That's four.  And your plug is full.  A dedicated brake light wire comes out of your Valley 52180.  But to use it you'll need at least a five wire plug.

converter on bike
outputs:

brown/run
yellow/left turn & stop
green/right turn & stop
white/ ground

I could hook the bike up to a camper and the lights would work :huepfenlol2:

Ok Brian, here's how you can do it.  Though some of what you've got you won't use.

First off ditch that automotive module pictured and mentioned above.  Instead get a Badlands ILL-01-A .

http://www.badlandsmotorcycleproducts.com/2008/Products/BETCSM.htm

Even though the trailer has dual filament 1157 bulbs in the corners you won't use both filaments.  Only the bright brake light half of the bulb.  In other words you'll be using it like an 1156 bulb.

That Badlands module will combine the tail light, turn signal and brake light functions on to a single wire for each corner.  That's how you'll get everything including a separate dedicated brake light feed in a four wire plug.  Do this:

Under the saddle plug the Badlands module in BEFORE the trailer harness pigtail adapter that you've got.  You can then use the trailer pigtail's right tail light and left tail light wires to feed brake/run/signal to each corner of your trailer.  Remember to use only the bright filament of the 1157 bulbs in the corners of the trailer.

Use the ground leg coming out of the pigtail to be the ground all the way to the rear.  Those three wires will now ground the trailer and get all three functions to each corner of the trailer (thanks to the Badlands module).

Now find the wires in the trailer pigtail adapter that are the dedicated brake light feeds.  Since it's for a bike application there should be one for each side.  They'll both be all brake light all the time.  So it won't matter which one you use.  Pick one and let it feed the third brake light in the middle of the trailer.

Voila, all functions on each corner and a dedicated third brake light all on a four wire trailer connector.

Like we discussed the other day with my trailer and adding additional turn signals on the side.
Did you get this adapter yet?

Using Valley Two Wire to Three Wire Converter Part # 52180 to Provide Third Brake Light for Trailer

Question:

I have standard 7 wiring on my trailer. The Yellow and Green wires control both the brake and turn signal lights. Can I use the 52180 on my trailer to create a third signal for just the brake function to add a third brake light? I was hoping to connect the yellows and greens at the back end of the trailer and use the red for the third brake light.

Using the Valley Tail Light Converter, part 52180 should do the trick for you.

If you are wanting to leave the existing tail lights on your trailer operating as both directional and brake lights, you would tap the green and the yellow wires of the converter into the appropriate wires leading to the tail lights. The red wire exiting the converter would then be used to power your third brake light. The yellow and green wires exiting the converter would not be needed, simply cut them short and seal the ends.
