HD putting nitrogen in tires in 2011?
« on: April 26, 2011, 07:59:00 PM »

I just had a someone tell me that HD is putting nitrogen in the 2011 CVOs tires or at least in the 2011 CVO RG Ultra.  I have not been able to find anything in the manual about this.  This person is a HD trained mechanic that has his own shop.  Has anyone heard this?

A tiny point.  I think the caps for cages are green.  My son put it in my truck a couple years ago.  I thought I saw green "indicator" of some sort on several new bikes in the dealership recently.  Tell you the truth I didn't think about it much but I seem to remember seeing something on the rim that made me think of nitrogen.

I don't know if this is everyone's experience but I've been riding... well I'm in my 5th decade for crap sake.  Bike tires/rims don't hold air!  I mean I have to fill them up several times per year.  This is my experience for laced wheels (which I think are worse) all the way through tubeless tires we have now.

4 bikes in my shop this spring (one belongs to a neighbor storing it while in Florida for the winter)  All 4 were around 25 lbs after sitting all winter.  Never ends!  Wish somebody would fix it! :P

Point is, if "air" leaks, so will nitrogen.  And, it's not exactly readily available.  At least in my compressor!

I think your mechanic is pulling your leg.  Considering how cheap Harley has become, consider yourself lucky they put plain old air in your tires without charging extra.

Jerry

btw, there's nothing magic about nitrogen in your tires.  Believe all the hype if you like, but that's basically what it is, hype.

I too put nitrogen in all my tires...and have ever since I first filled up a bicycle tire as a little tyke over 40 years ago........well, over 78% N2 anyway...and just under 21% O2.....and about a % other stuff. Putting in pure N2 seems like a waste to me.

I totally agree, It is a bunch of crap and I cannot see H.D. putting this in from the factory. Maybe some of the dealers are putting it in their sold bikes to "impress" the customer. Does nothing for me. Just put on a green valve cap and you will never know the difference. As often as you have to add air to M/C tires, do you really think anyone would wait until they could find some nitrogen? I guess you could go to the local scuba diving shop and get some specially blended nitrox.

I use nitrogen in all my tires is denser than air and is not susceptable to change due to temperature change Costco in California puts it in all their tires and my local store tops up my tires whenever I need it I know initially the first few top ups will be the air that is left in the tire from not being able to completely evacuate all the original HD air from when the bike was new I have had it in my convertible since new in 2007 and check every 6 months and have only been a couple of pounds low pretty good over 6 months

On a molecular level... the nitrogen molecules are much larger than O2 (supposedly less pass through the rubber compound), and (more importantly) much more temperature stable.  With a nitrogen fill you won't find the +/- 5 lb fluctuations depending on when you check your pressure.  It trickles down from Nascar... where tire pressure is critical.  For cars and bikes?.. not so much.

I love how people fall for this BS about nitrogen and temperature changes.  Rather than listen to me, go to any high school science teacher and have them explain the various gas laws, especially the part about temperature versus volume and pressure.  Also, next time you're listening to those announcers on that racing program, pay attention to how they mention getting the tires up to temp to get the pressures up before leaning on it too hard.  If nitrogen pressure wasn't affected by temps, why would the racers need to consider that when inflating those tires?

BTW, I use plain old 78% nitrogen mixed with various other stuff, versus the 98% max nitrogen they sell at the typical tire store, and I also don't have major air loss.  It has a lot more to do with the tire, rim, and valve than it does the percentage of nitrogen in the tire.

I was reading a Mr. Goodwrench ad for a Chevy dealer in the paper this morning, and the absolutely ridiculous claims being made for nitrogen made me laugh louder than anything in the comic section.  For only $39.95, this stuff will do everything but grow hair.  And as a famous person once said, a sucker is born every minute.

Jerry

Oh, that pressure thing?  Try changing the claim in the future to something more along the lines of "when using pure nitrogen, pressure changes due to temperature changes will be more predictable".  That statement is correct, the other is not.

I am not a chemists, I just ride. But I have put on 2k miles on my sergu 2011 and checking the pressure , and it has not changed 1 psi since I got it out of the lot. And yes has some Nitrogen mixture in it. That's all I care about. The rest of you can enjoy reviewing the periodic table .  :2vrolijk_21:

Are we still having this debate?  Jerry's right.  In a fixed volume, pressure and temperature are directly proportionate to one another regardless of what molecule of gas is in the space.  That's why it's called the UNIVERSAL Gas Law.  http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/kinetic/idegas.html

In other words, temperature has a far greater impact on pressure than anything else.

And another thing, Nitrogen and Oxygen and right beside each other on the periodic table of elements.  That means their molecular weights are nearly identical and BOTH exist in a natural state as dimers.  Stated simply, Oxygen is 2 grams HEAVIER in a volume of 22.4L because it has a LARGER molecule.
