Detonation
« on: May 02, 2011, 03:25:21 PM »

hey guys its been a year and 7,000 or so miles since I change to the stage 2 Fullsac kit for the 110, catless pipe 2" cores 54 cams and springs and gasket. TTS map was installed. I have noticed lately the that it knocks a little when I pull from a dead stop evn though I am using a 30 tooth and new belt. Not sure but something is not right. Power feels like its down as well. Would she need a new tune or plugs. Bike has 12k on the clock and always runs 93 oct. Any suggestions?

You might want to consider trying some Seafoam before changing the plugs. Carbon build up can contribute, along with bad gas, etc. If it still pings, then you might want to back off the timing a bit or richen it up slightly in the ranges (rpm vs throttle) you are nicing the pinging.

Thanks don't know what Seafoam is. Not sure  what is causing the issue. Don't think its the gas it has been doing it for 3 or 4 tanks now.

Seafoam can be had at your local Auto parts store. white can about $6 or $7. Just follow the instructions.

Check for intake leaks.

Hey BigLew,

Before you go jumping through hoops put your laptop on the bike and do a data recording and see if the knock sensor is being activated.   If it is then you can go to that/those cell(s) that are showing timing issues and correct them.   If you have no timing issues then you can start looking for the cause of the sounds you are hearing.

Rest assured that the tune itself did not change. Something else on the bike has changed. If it had been the tune it would have done it all the time since the tune went in not 7000 miles later. Check for intake and exhaust leaks as a first thing to do.

Yup, highly unlikely that the "tune" has suddenly changed on it's own.  However, things like intake air leaks, low fuel pressure, partially plugged injectors, etc. can affect the mixture, and heavy carbon buildup can cause preignition.  Has the bike been stored over the winter (sorry, I don't remember where you're from)?  The Sea Foam product mrmagloo mentioned is a fuel system cleaner, btw.

Might it be hasty to rule out an improper tune as the root cause? I have never received a "canned" map that didn't require major changes in VE tables after running v-tune. Different engines run differently from each other even if they have many of the same components in common. If the motorcycle was running too lean after the mods when the canned map was uploaded from the beginning, it would run fine at first, but over time a lean engine will take a toll causing damage to valve stems or guides, among other problems. Just pondering possibilities...

What year is your bike? If it has the newer o2's and you have removed the cat maybe try reflashing the map. Are your breathers still vented back into the throttle body?

I agree. Reflash the map,or just reset afv. Then see how long it takes to drive it lean.
you really need a good tune. Canned maps are just a place to start.

Thanks for all the info guys. The bike doesn't have a lot of miles on it (09 SERG with 12k on the clock) but it never sets very long. I ride almost every week. I guess I need to find a good tuner near Greensboro. When we did the work originally they (dealer) made 4 or 5 pulls to make sure the tune was ok but not much else. (108 hp and 110 on tq) was expecting a little more. And when we changed the gear it was really quick from a start. Seems a little sluggish now, not bad just different. I believe when we changed the cat everything was hooked back up. Maybe I'm babying her to much. Don't hear or see any leaks and not sure how to test for that. Just the normal ball bearings rattling around in the top end. I put some seafoam in it last night and I will see if that helps. From there what?

BL.

As GRC mentioned, not only is Seafoam a fuel line cleaner, when added to the fuel at approx 1/2 t0 1 oz per gallon, but is also used as a top end cylinder and head cleaner when fed at a high rate through the intake. In that scenario, you remove the air cleaner, and pump it in at a rate where you can just keep the bike running at 2,000 rpm. As you get near the end of the can, you increase the flow of Seafoam and allow the bike to flood out and die.  At that time, you let the bike sit for approx 15 to 30 minutes to soak.  When you start it up, it will run pretty ragged, and you need to rev it up to clear all of the now dislodged gunk.  It'll take a good 10 minutes to clear everything and get s smooth idle again. Once it's all clear and back to normal, I like to change the spark plugs and the motor oil.  Seafoam is recommended by a number of mfr's as a top end cleaner.

Seafoam is a product that is used a lot by some Star owners, particularly Stratoliner owners...I used to own one.  It's got a 113" engine in it...those that used the Seafoam swore by it.  I never put enough miles on mine to need to try the stuff.

I just put some in the gas didn't do anything with the intake, is that necessary? I really don't think its the issue anyway. Just a shot in the dark.
