LED spotlights ???
« on: May 10, 2011, 06:41:27 PM »

I have for some time, been very disappointed with the lighting on my 2010 SEUC. I have a HID Mo-co low beam headlight. I changed the spotlight bulbs to 886's because of the higher wattage. All of this helps, BUT still not great. I live in hight country and animals are allways just out of headlight sight.
I noticed on ebay there are LED replacement bulbs for the spots between $20 and $30. The story say they are great and very bright.

I was wondering if anyone has tried the LED bulbs and what were the results?

I think for $30 I'll just get a pair and try them out. If that works out I'll look at replacing the highbeam with an LED too.

Ill keep the results posted.

OK I got the LED's in the mail yesterday. I'll try to do the best I can to describe the results.

Please remember this is purely subjective as I have no measuring instruments.

First I tried installing just one LED bulb so I could compare it with the 886 that was in the other spot. The 886 is definitely brighter and trows More light, but it was very yellow compared to the LED.
Then I tried it against the 881, I seamed about the same amount of light was coming from both of them, still yellow from the 881.
The color of the LED was almost the same as the Harley HID,  It matched very well. So if you are trying to look good and brightness is not an issue then this may be for you.
I have not tried the at night yet only in my darkened garage.  At this point I'm not sure if I'll be disappointed.
I do not have a camera to take pix otherwise I would have.

Edit: Woops, I just re-read and noticed you were talking about LED spot bulb replacements.  Sorry the following doesn't necessarily apply then.  :nixweiss:

I did the upgrade and took some shots (which can be found in here http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=57624.0)

Here are two shots with them off then on -- main light is also the HD LED.  Not the best camera (phone) but gives an idea.

And one more shot (best quality I got that night) with the spots on with the main light.

Don't think you'll be disappointed.  They do add quite a bit of light out to the sides of the bike.  I have additional shots of the light patterns out to the sides of the road in the thread above.  The environment was almost pitch black out in the farmlands behind where I live.

Your Pix look great. For the $25 I spent I think it will be worth it. I think you said that yours were kuri's. Mine are not, just LED replacement bulbs.
Anyway thanks for the shots, they do show off what I need up here. WE have lots of deer and elk, not to meantion bears too.
I may just have to break down and lay out the big bucks.

Sorry, when I first saw this thread, I thought you were referencing LED lights in general.  It wasn't till after I posted, that I picked up you were trying the LED replacement bulbs and looking for feedback.

Mrmagloo is the one that has the Kuryakyn LED spots which I have not seen in person.

The shots you see are of the HD LED lights.  In the thread that I linked, I have all the parts #s listed that I used, and somewhere along the way I listed the price I was able to get them for.

Hope my mis-post still helps you out.  :2vrolijk_21:  If it helps in your decision, the lamps are supposed to last about 150k hours -- which is 5.7 years or about 100k miles of riding.  At least from what I picked up reading other's reviews.

LarrysBB, you will see light measured in kelvin(temperature/color) and lumens(amount of light).  Higher kelvin numbers do not mean higher lumen numbers.  Do your research and you'll be happy.  More light (lumens) and color (kelvin) work together to help you see better.

I have the headlight and both spots installed on my bike and absolutely LOVE them. I own two bikes and the difference at night between the two is remarkable!
