I don't have a nim installed so 19 and 31 are not used. my instructions already show the tn/be and v/gy in the right connector.

The wires for 19 and 31 are used for the ipod harness in the 35 wire connector (connector 28), per the revised version of the installation instructions dated 2010-09-14:

http://www.harley-davidson.com/en_US/Media/downloads/Service/isheets/-J05168.pdf

The earlier version of the installation instructions had the wire assignments for 19 and 31 reversed.

When you refer to the "right connector," which connector are you referring to?  The connectors are numbered in the installation instructions; which numbered connector is the "right connector"?

Hi Carl,

Sounds like you may have the answer to my problem.  I actually do have the Zumo 66O on my bike.  I do not have the instructions with me for the interface unit i purchased so I'm not sure what version I have.  But if i understand you correctly, if the V/GY is in slot 31, and the TN/BE is in slot 18, I need to reverse those according to the instructions you have on this thread and that may likely fix the volume issue?  If this is the case, I know there is a special tool needed to pull these DIN out without damaging the wires, do you know what the tool is?  And am I correct in understanding the fix?  Man, you are my new best friend becasue this has been very frustrating!!

If your current wiring is that you have the V/GY wire in slot 31 and the TN/BE in slot 18 then yes you need to reverse them. The following is the correct wiring placement. The right connector on the back of the radio is connector 28A. Looking at the back of the radio the correct conector (28A) is on the right side the connector on the left side of the radio is connector 27.

• Insert the tan/red wire terminal into cavity 8.
• Insert the violet/gray wire terminal into cavity 19.
• Insert the tan/blue wire terminal into cavity 31.

Hey Jim, Thanks!  This should be easy to figure out without having to pull the fairing again.  I know we installed the dins the way our instruction told us, so if this is opposite the directions, i will bring it to the HD dealer and tell them to switch the pins.  I assume you need a special tool to pull those out correctly?

I will let you know the outcome after I look at the instructions when I get home.  No need to pull it apart, hopefully the problem lies with the revised instructions?????

Hey Jim, my instructions are dated 2011-02-08 i have all the colored wires in the correct cavities and double checked the pins were set in the 35 pin connector. Crimson slate said his rear speakers are loader than the front ones, i don't have my rear speakers on the bike. do you know what cavity and color is the rear. Any ideas you have will be appreciated. No special tool is required to remove wires from the 35 wire connector (i.e. connector 28B). Just click on the "Instruction sheets" tab on this link from the manufacturer's website for info on removing wires:

http://www.tycoelectronics.com/catalog/pn/en/776164-1?RQPN=776164-1

3.2. Contact Removal
1. Move the red wedge lock to the open position as
follows:
a. Insert the tip of a screwdriver having a blade
between 2 and 5 mm [.078 and .196 in.] wide
between the edge of the plug assembly
housing and one corner of the red wedge lock
See Figure 4.
b. Gently pry the edge of the red wedge lock
until it is released from (but not completely out
of) the housing.
Be careful not to break any part of the assembly
when releasing the red wedge lock.
c. Repeat these steps for the opposite corner
of the red wedge lock. The red wedge lock is
now in the open position.
2. Gently pull the wire of the contact to be removed
while rotating the wire (a quarter turn each direction)
back and forth until the contact is removed from the
housing. See Figure 5.

Oh well, I got excited for nothing. The directions I had were the same directions.  I had the pins in the correct slot as stated above and in my directions dated February 2011.  I have it installed correctly, I can only assume that there is a problem with the module unless someone has another idea?  Apparently tgunner and I have the same issue.  Keep in touch and please share any thoughts or ideas....especially if they worked!

If the wiring is correct and you have checked that the pins are properly seated then the only other thinks I can think of to do is 1). check the version of the software on the radio and make sure it is up to date. If it is try reseting the radio back to factory settings and 2). replace the IPod module and see if that resolves the problem.

Good Luck

:pepper:  Yeah, it worked.  It's still not as loud as the Ipod hooked up directly to the auxiliary, but it's very very close and it works perfectly.  Thank you for the help and advice!!  I ended up velcroing an older NANO to the inside of my fairing just behind the headlight.  It's an 8mb unit and it's maxed out. The only thing I would maybe do is change some of the playlist but I went over those and revised them before the install.  It's easy to get to, all I need to do is pull the headlight out and it's right there.  I didn't have to give HD another $115 for the saddle bag package, nor did I have to run the wire to the back of the bike.  It worked out great!

Thanks again!! :huepfenlol2:

One more try i found a couple for loose pins too.  Pull your 35 pin connector and turn it upside down.  Make sure you can clearly see the bottoms of the dins for each plug and make sure they are seated completely.
