SERT or PCIII?
« on: May 11, 2006, 01:02:25 PM »

Sorry if this is an FAQ, I thought I'd seen it come up before, but a search fails to reveal......

Is there some reason to go for the SERT over the PCIII?

Assuming the SERT part # is 32107-01E  (can somebody confirm??) then at $357 it's a fair bit more expensive than the PCIII USB.

So which should I go for? Is the SERT worth the extra $$$?

Jim,

That is the current part number for the SERT, and that is the discounted price you can get at places like Zannoti's.  MSRP is more like $459.95.   PCIII-USB's can normally be found for around $280, with ocassional specials down in the $250-$260 range.

The big difference between the two is that the SERT is a software and interface package that lets you change the map in the stock ECM, whereas the PC is an add-on device which modifies the inputs and outputs of the stock ECM.  The SERT has more fine tuning capabilities than the PC, but Power Commander has recently added some features such as the rev limiter and start fuel adjustment.  As to which one is "best", there is no real answer.  It depends on what kind of modifications you plan on doing, and who you plan to have tune the bike.  Some tuners prefer one over the other, so the universal advice on this site is to find the tuner you plan to use and then ask him which one he prefers.  Try this thread for a good explanation of the various options by DaFixer:

in my oppinion, it all comes down to the tuner.
if your hd dealership has a good dyno tuner, then the race tuner is a great choice. although, if i am not mistaken, the race tuner can only be used on one specific bike.
if you have a good power commander tuner, then the pc is all you need to get your scoot right.

Well, now that I know the difference, I think it has to be a PCIII.

Reason being, here in the wilds of Scotland - hell, ANYWHERE here in Scotland! - I'll struggle greatly to find someone to tune using either, but at least if I get the PCIII, somebody else with the same setup on here might be kind enough to mail me a map for the PCIII which (if the setup is identical!) should be close enough.

Planned mods = SE air cleaner with K&N insert, Rinehart True Duals, and - obviously! - a PCIII.  Anyone got a map for exactly that setup on a CUSE they had done on a dyno that they could let me have?

You might want to wait before buying either if you can. I was speaking to the GM at my local dealership about this very issue. My dealer says the SERT is back ordered and will be listed as obsolete. When I questioned this he stated that the MOCO will be coming out with a new version some time this fall. I asked if it would be a closed loop system with O2 sensors and he implied that may be a good possibility. I have installed a PCIII that a friend gave me until I get more info on the SERT. If it's a closed loop system { which would make sense }, it would be a better system. ;D

:-) Wait?  Part of our OCD is the "NOW!" aspect.  I could always change to a closed loop system when they are available, I guess, but I need to get organised for this summer at the moment.

Are maps for the SERT saveable, emailable, usable?

Hi Eqcons,
If you have not already purchased the exhaust and air cleaner you may want to look at the Freedom Cycles website and the threads on here about them. They have a total package where you can buy the tuner already programed to match the 2006 bike with their modified Rhinehart pipes and an improved air cleaner setup.
This way you make one purchase and just bolt everything on, then just ride it and enjoy. No downloads or dyno time needed. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Yes, it's just such an expensive route, because I'm in the UK.

Jim,
Yes they are. One thing to keep in mind there has been updates/upgrades to SERT. You will have to make sure that the version you have, and the version of the map that someone sends you are compatible. Otherwise you will not be able to use it (well I understand there is a way around this, but not a simple load and go deal check out this thread - SERT map NFG?).

Never easy, is it FD?  ;)  Sounds like another good reason to go for the PC3...

I note that Drebbin (where are you Dreb - been missing for a few weeks!) has exactly the right setup with a SERT, but does he have his map, I wonder?
