Most of you have read my previous post regarding the lifter failure at 23400 miles....

THe bike spent a total of 12 weeks in the shop total while doing a few upgrades along the way.

A little over 2500 miles later I took the bike in for tires, brakes, and the requisite oil change...

Now, with Amsoil, I'd lose a quart over every 2500-3500 miles.. not too bad...

However, when the engine went back together, there was discussion over Amsoil, so I said fine.. put in the Syn 3 and lets see what it does...  in the 2500 miles the bike lost almost 2 quarst of oil... no leaks, but the piston slap is still notably there...

It appears to be getting by the rings as the heads have new seals and I believe guides.

Looks like a set of pistons and axtell cylinders are next.....

What about headwork?

Remember, I must ship all of this stuff via the shipping pirates that rule Hawaii's shipping industry...

Riding style: Moderate.... (OK.. a good mix of cruising and a bit of playtime)

I use the bike as a commuter, little traffic, but quite a few traffic lights. Total one-way is about 18 miles, 14 of which is on the freeway, with the other 4 miles on surface streets.

Obviously no "touring" here... the rock is 112 miles around.

I've read references where the Fueling OP seems to result in more oil consumed...

I've used Fueling oil pumps for years on multipe bikes and motors.  I've personally never experienced oil consumption in any motor...

To my knowledge, there's only a few ways for that much oil to be consumed....anyone behind you notice any smoking, or does it smoke when you start it?  I would have been concerned with it using a quart every 2500 miles before you had the work done, and I'd be REAL concerned about using 2 quarts every 2500 and would seriously question the work done on the motor.

I've only got 3500 on my 2011 SERGU, but it hasn't burned a drop of oil yet.  But I didn't break it in according to HD recommendations, and I got rid of the Syn 3 after 50 miles.

My '06 103 with 25K on it...it wasn't babied either...would use maybe 1/2 quart between 5K oil changes.

I lost three quarters of a quart in the first 1000miles and 3quarts of syn3 from 1000 to 5000 miles. that was only 5000 on the motor.  the last quart was all over the front of a nice white gold wing after an Iron Butt run. Break in as stated by HD, Never twisted it up tight, Just rode the dam thing.. warrenty should kick in after 2quarts between services. i had mine checked and filled up at every 1000 mile intervial. took it to the dealer and told them the check the gas and fill it up with oil and got a copy of the work order. my cylinders were ovaled, rings shot, valve guides shot. etc etc etc. I went with Axtel cylinders and pistons, and T-mann heads and cams. you got the Heads off anyway might as well match them to the motor and cams. Weld ,true and balance the crank so that doesn't pop up and bite you in the backside.  Service manager told me warrenty would replace everything with new HD parts. I asked him "why would I put Parts in that didn't work the first time" so my dealer worked with me on the engine build. but it hasn't lost any oil since the build. By the way I put Amsoil staight in mine after the build and nothing was said by my dealer.

I like how you think..... I'd suck azz on the shipping in and out of here though...

Unfortunately the OE warranty is done.... so now I rely on ESP...

There are horror stories of NEW bikes with oval cylinders with rust in the bores...  thats a spooky thought.. I thought each motor was run before the bike left Milwaukee?

To answer: no smoke on startup. however it does have an odor that could be oil. My wife said she noticed the smell of oil when she was following behind me last week.... and now I am beginning to notice the black on the back of the bags and fender.

I went to Amsoil early on... only switched back to syn 3 because the dealership was spewing horror stories of failed lifters due to amsoil..  (I know.. bullchit) I do want to try revtech 25w-60... I'm tired of the big sewing machine sound.

I'd top off with straight 50 wt, until you have your issue addressed.
You'll notice the consumption almost stop, and quieter operation as well.

Scott, I know they are incorrect... I think its coconut rum actually...

I still run Amsoil 20w-50 in the primary and Amsoil gear lube in the trans. At one point they inadvertantly put Syn3 in it (3 holes) and it sounded like crap...  I got home dumped it and replaced with Amsoil.

Unfortunately, I need them to verify the oil consumption so I'll leave the Syn3 in it until I hit 1K past the last service. 300 miles since then already. Time to go ride around the rock this weekend.

Nah.  They do run them about a mile or maybe two at the end of the assembly line in York however.  If it doesn't blow up immediately, it's good as far as Harley is concerned and it get's shipped to the dealer.  Let the next guy worry about it seems to be their philosophy.

Jerry in some fairness to the co. they should not run them till they blow up. I expect there is only so much they can know about the future of a motor. I do expect to buy a new motor with no to low miles.

I was @ York last Summer.. They do run them before they crate them. The bike I watched was ran from 0 - 80 mph several times with a bunch of diagnostic crap hooked to it. Didn't look like the guy was babying the unit he was given her..

I had a brand new 113ci done two summers ago with the mva se heads, went thru lots of oil like yours. Local HD took it back in and did a leak down test, IIRC it was around 15% so they installed new rings. Another 2k mi. still using lots of oil 1qt in 2k so they took it back. This time they replaced stock valve seals with vitons and now i go 3-4k with minimal to no loss in 15k using 20-50 amsoil.

FRom what I recall reeading elsewhere here there are instances of new jugs with rust in the bores. (SE, out of box)

Take a BRAND NEW bike, and run the piss out of it with ZERO miles on it... then tell the buyer to follow certain break in guidelines... yup.. thats real good..
