New rollerchain camplate kit and cams
« on: June 03, 2011, 03:20:25 PM »

A builder I am trying to work with on changing out some 575 cams is asking me about the '07 conversion camplate/oil pump kit.  He was asking me about the type of plate it was and that most cams might not work with it and my '05 103 SEEG.  I'm not quite sure what he is talking about.  I didn't think I had to order a special Redshift575 and bearings for my year bike and the '07 plate.
It seems the lift is too much for my bike and making for a really noisy top end.  I may just go back to the old 253 cams but am willing to consider others like Andrews TW 55 or the 37b, someone mentioned the 48H but I don't have specs on it.

Will only certain cams work?  Confused..... :confused5:   I think most of it is that he is not familiar with the '05 CVO 103......no headwork.

There are two different ways to "upgrade" the '06 and earlier Twin Cams to the new hydraulic chain tensioners.  One is a special cam plate and oil pump kit made specifically for that purpose, and it uses the original style ball/roller outer cam bearings in the plate.  That type uses any cams made for the '06 and earlier engines.

The other way was to use the '07 stock cam plate and oil pump.  That plate doesn't use outer cam bearings, and the outer cam journals are made differently to work with that system.  But you can't just use a cam designed for a '07 and later engine, because the inner cam bearing and journal size was changed also for '07.  So that requires what is called a "conversion cam", which combines the old size inner bearing journals with the new size and style outer bearing journals.

I believe the Red Shift 575 didn't come in a conversion style, so I assume you have the plate with the ball & roller bearings.  If that is the case, you can use any cam designed for the '99-'06 version of the Twin Cam.

Talk to some of the other guys on the site like Fired00d and Twolanerider who have had the Red Shift 575's.  I don't remember them or any of the others who installed them mentioning a big increase in noise levels.

Did have the Redshift 575 cams for a couple years.  Good early torque and not a noisy beast at all.  And mine were installed as gear driven.  I liked that cam a lot.

Have them in a 05SEEG chain drive

Little more top end noise from the fast ramp on the cam, but a nice improvement :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks guys....I think I do remember discussions about the '07 plates and the one for older bikes.  I'll get out my invoice and double check the part number.  I'm also pretty sure I saw 4 new bearings on there too.
Hillside Cycle has been very helpful in a post from them in 2010 about quieting the 575 by making a precise measurement on the adjustable pushrod to the lifter.
As I said before, HD was adamant about using solid pushrods even though Zippers and I suggested otherwise.  So maybe with the solids they are just too loose in there?
What did you use for adjustable pushrods?  Just the SE tapered?

We use S&S S&S pushrod kits, almost exclusively in all our builds.
The chome-moly units come complete with tubes, seals.
I should buy 'em by the gross, the way we go thru them. :D
