A builder I am trying to work with on changing out some 575 cams is asking me about the '07 conversion camplate/oil pump kit. He was asking me about the type of plate it was and that most cams might not work with it and my '05 103 SEEG. I'm not quite sure what he is talking about. I didn't think I had to order a special Redshift575 and bearings for my year bike and the '07 plate.
It seems the lift is too much for my bike and making for a really noisy top end. I may just go back to the old 253 cams but am willing to consider others like Andrews TW 55 or the 37b, someone mentioned the 48H but I don't have specs on it.
Will only certain cams work? Confused..... I think most of it is that he is not familiar with the '05 CVO 103......no headwork.
There are two different ways to "upgrade" the '06 and earlier Twin Cams to the new hydraulic chain tensioners. One is a special cam plate and oil pump kit made specifically for that purpose, and it uses the original style ball/roller outer cam bearings in the plate. That type uses any cams made for the '06 and earlier engines.
The other way was to use the '07 stock cam plate and oil pump. That plate doesn't use outer cam bearings, and the outer cam journals are made differently to work with that system. But you can't just use a cam designed for a '07 and later engine, because the inner cam bearing and journal size was changed also for '07. So that requires what is called a "conversion cam", which combines the old size inner bearing journals with the new size and style outer bearing journals.
I believe the Red Shift 575 didn't come in a conversion style, so I assume you have the plate with the ball & roller bearings. If that is the case, you can use any cam designed for the '99-'06 version of the Twin Cam.
Talk to some of the other guys on the site like Fired00d and Twolanerider who have had the Red Shift 575's. I don't remember them or any of the others who installed them mentioning a big increase in noise levels.
