Where do you live Dude ? Your profile is incomplete. No way I'm gonna ride through the deserts of the southwest with dyno oil in anything. Ever put you hand on your primary case on a 100+ degree day?  Betcha can't hold it there. Hot clutch equals loss of power. Anything I can do to cool it down I'm gonna do.

As Hubbard would say  " so endeth the lesson "

Colorado Springs.
Hey, knock yourself out!  it surely wont' hurt anything!  And the oil companies will be grateful.

I'm glad this lesson has ended.

These are getting a bit dated, but QuickThrottle magazine has some archive articles on Synthetic oil:
Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 and Part 4.  These explain some of the terminology as well as examine various oils.

One of the items mentioned in these articles is to avoid the M1 15W-50 in the Primary due to Moly, however other discussions, such as in this BITOG (BobIsTheOilGuy) string and this one, contend that even higher Mo concentrations are fine.  Personally, I'll avoid putting the high Mo oils in my primary but YMMV.

For more info this BITOG article disucsses Friction Modifiers and this webpage goes over the various types, or Groups, of oils.

Hotline...don't hesitate...you won't regret it.  If it'll make you feel better, run Mobil 1 20w50 VTWIN...specially formulated for HD type twins.  Both are excellent, and you are doing your motor a huge favor!!  Will run cooler...less friction...fewer changes...there really isn't a down side at all. As I stated earlier, I found both Mobil 1 motorcycle oils at Advance Auto...don't know if they're everywhere though.  Probably a lot of the crotch rocket stores will have it though...my Ducati dealer has Amsoil, Motul, Mobil 1 (both kinds) and Shell (NOT a true syn).  Can't go wrong with any of those!

The Advance Auto I hit had neither (I didn't try them all), but one of the three local Walmarts did have the VTwin.  Everyone had the M1 15W-50 EP auto oil...

gd...the Advance Auto I hit didn't have it on the shelf, so the guy at the parts counter had a moment just as I was about to leave and I asked him just for the hell of it...bingo!  He said they keep it in the back 'cause there's no room, and most of the customers are buying stuff for their cages and not bikes.  This particular store is about 3 blocks for the local HD dealer, so they sell a lot of it to those not wanting to get the syn3.  I think I paid about 50 bucks for a case (6 quarts).  Can't wait to get the 1K done...I'm changing over at that time...the dealer ain't going to like it though.

Went to the store with the wifey last night...

Walmart had the following:

Mobil 1 V-Twin 20W50, Crankcase
Mobil 1 75/140 Gear Lube, Tranny
Mobil 1 10W40 MT4X, Primary

It was one stop shopping. While getting food for today's BBQ grabbed $50 worth of oil.

Do I have the application laid out correctly? I live in FLorida where it has been STUPID HOT lately. I am getting rid of the SYN3, the scoot is just about at the 5K service interval. It will be time next weekend.

Michael....Good that you found it all at one place...my Wal Mart does not carry the motorcycle versions of Mobil 1 at all, or not the last time I was in.

I run the VTWIN in all three holes, now that my 1K service is over with.  The gear lube will not HURT anything, but according to my source, it is not necessary to run the thick gear lube, and it will rob some power from the HP at the rear wheel.  I run the MT4X in my Ducati, which is a "tighter" engine, and revs to 8500.  I live in Alabama and it's god-awful hot here too.

Mobil 1 V-Twin synthetic 20w50 is the one. I've use in all 3 cavities and it runs cooler than Amsoil, shifts better and is easier to find. AutoZone has it all the time.

Wow :vrolijk27: :vrolijk27:

you went into the archives for this one

Living on an island makes finding anything motorcycle hard. Most everything has to be ordered.

I have to run to Advance Auto today....will check with them

Wall Mart used to carry Mobil 1 V-Twin synthetic. In 2003 i bought a miss marked case for $48. A few months latter i went back for more and the auto dept guy said they stopped stocking the stuff. I think it was a fluke where they meant to stock the normal Mobil 1. I don't use synthetic oil anymore. I stick with good 'ole cheap dinosaur oil and change my oil every 2500 - 3000 miles. I'm very happy with my operating temps and price of my oil changes.  :P I think it's funny that a lot of folks using synthetics still do oil changes at 2500-3000 miles. I guess most people don't realize synthetics hold up under acceptable temperatures twice as long as dinosaur oil. I would be one of those anal folks too, so i decided to stick with dinosaur and save a few bucks.

Have a buddy here that does that.  Syn3 and religiously changes every 2000-2500 miles.  Oy vey.  I'm way too lazy for that.  I like both the 5k service interval and the extra buffer of heat protection just in case it ever gets stuck in traffic somewhere.

Mobil 1 is pricey, $9.49 a quart, but I still change my oil and filter every 2,500. The way I look at it is I spent a decent amount of money for my SE103 and SE 6 spd in my 05 Ultra and 10 bucks a quart is cheap if it keeps it running good and makes it last longer.

I only use mileage as a guidline, lots of highway miles, I dont worry til 5k, lots of short hard donut runs then I like to change more frequently...Its all about your comfort level...

My wet clutch bikes get changed a 1k, dino...
