News Story--Rider Dies While Protesting Helmet Laws
« on: July 03, 2011, 11:49:08 AM »

Not the kind of press the riding community ever needs.  Feel bad for the rider of course.  But talk about bad timing...  From the AP wirefeed:

..

NY motorcyclist dies on ride protesting helmet law
AP

ONONDAGA, N.Y. (AP) — Police say a motorcyclist participating in a protest ride against helmet laws in upstate New York died after he flipped over the bike's handlebars and hit his head on the pavement.

The accident happened Saturday afternoon in the town of Onondaga, in central New York near Syracuse.

State troopers tell The Post-Standard of Syracuse that 55-year-old Philip A. Contos of Parish, N.Y., was driving a 1983 Harley Davidson with a group of bikers who were protesting helmet laws by not wearing helmets.

Troopers say Contos hit his brakes and the motorcycle fishtailed. The bike spun out of control, and Contos toppled over the handlebars. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Troopers say Contos would have likely survived if he had been wearing a helmet.

Yep, sure lend weight to the helmet laws. IMHO they should be optional, but sad story.

I would never advocate a law requiring a helmet. Just another restriction to personal freedom. On the other hand, I am alive today because of two different helmets that saved my life on two seperate occasions. Of course I support assisted suicide as well....

Rather than start another argument about helmet laws, let's just agree that in a perfect world personal freedom of choice would trump laws aimed at protecting us from ourselves.  In this case, a gentleman paid the ultimate price for his choice.  But that isn't the end of the story, IMHO.  What about his loved ones?  Did his disregard for personal safety treat them fairly?  I'm guessing they won't view this as a brave sacrifice for a noble cause.  :nixweiss:

The irony reminds me of a similar one years ago out here in California. Yosemite National Park had banned base jumping from El Capitan for safety reasons. But a protester decided to use the opporunity to make a statement and show how safe base jumping is. So along with a couple of co-horts he went to the top of El Cap and lauched himself over the edge with cameras rolling. He died when his body struck the valley floor at full speed because his parachute failed to deploy. Later his base jumping supporters tried to blame the park, the US Government and the media for "creating a situation that made him jump in protest". The idea of responsibility for ones own actions was never discussed by his supporters. Later it was learned that he did not pack his own chute or even check it before jumping. That kind of weakens the whole argument.
