From Anne July 28th:
A day of rest it was not! A day of jumping through hoops it was! As they tell me-a day at a time, an hour at a time-need be a minute at a time. It also was the first 24 hours that I have not done my nicotine lozenges. To get on with a few of the gory details. After sleeping in til 9:30am we awoke to find we had slept through our first glorious sunny morn. We also overslept our complimentary breakfast which also meant no free lunch. OK no big deal until we jumped on JACK (name of our BMW motorcycle) to head off to get gas and breakfast at I-HOP (international house of pancakes) That is when our $750.00 GARMIN 660 GPS (global positioning system) spread wings when we were not looking-later to be found in the middle of a six lane road HURRAY-not! Unfortunately it had been run over cracking its cover plate TOTALED!! The rest of the day meeting one nice person after another who went way out of their way to help us out (to no avail) First was MARY our purple haired waitress at I-HOP who fell in love with Chris. Then BARB and JOANNE at ALASKA LEATHERS and JOSH at ALASKA MINING and DIVING and on and on. Really great folks up here! By 3pm we had come to term with the fact that we would be using paper maps for the rest of our adventure and to find our way home. (you know it has been done before) SO now at 3pm we began our investigative search of the location of the 1042 CLUB that holds strong memories for Chris's Dad who was stationed up here at FORT RICHARDSON in 1949-50. We found the approximate location and I began asking old relics in the prehistoric taverns about their memories. I ended up leaving my # for Whitie who sits on bar-stool 3 at the DARWIN BAR. I love those old guys! Dinner in our room, made on the camp stove with dreams of HOMER on the coast tomorrow then on to DENALI and MT. WHITNEY. Don;t let the bed-bugs bite, Annie
