I use a GPS in my work, wife uses one daily that came with lifetime map & traffic updates included and  I have a ZUMO that I bought the lifetime Garmin update deal for (got mine from Amazon, no tax, no postage $81.76 when I purchased it). Thing is a smart phone, which we have three of, will NEVER replace a good GPS, I have tried to use both my Blackberry's map program thru the sync on company car and my Droid. You have to keep plugging them up to car charger, which seems to kill the battery life, then unhook everytime you get out of the car (10 times + a day for me) then reconnect when you get back in and the screen is just to small. Even using the sync deal so I hear it thru the speakers sucks as it is a different volume for the phone calls, the GPS commands and the radio. Just give me a good GPS with lifetime updates and I am good to go. Updates by the way are not just maps, locations, phone numbers etc also update. imho.

I agree, the quest is a nice little navigation device.  You can try and contact Garmin and see if they have any CD's left in the warehouse.  I believe the last update for the quest was 2008.  I think that's the last version mine has.  It's been awhile since I've used it.  Heck, I still have my old Garmin 2610 (the "brick"), with it's last update from 2006.  I really liked that GPS also, now it's just a door stopper. :(

Thanks for trying to help, I have the latest Map software update available for this unit in version 7. Funny how I was able to update the harley dealers software to the latest just last year. I bought this unit when they first came out for my 2005 sefb and thats where is still works best, good thing HD offers updates and improvements for my sefb or I might have to junk it and go to a newer model huh........NEVER!!!!!

Ga3min's will be obsolete in the next year two. Smart phones have GPS maps real time. Only thing missing is the cradle to hold it to your bike.

And cell phone coverage in the middle of nowhere.  I'll stick to my Garmin

Just a couple years ago I carried a palm pilot, ipod, and cell phone.  Now it's all on one device.  The technology is changing rapidly.  Those who think the Garmin will never be replaced need to go to their basements and find their VCR's and throw them out.  It's a static device which alone makes it a dinosaur.  Even digital cameras are becoming obselete.

Your points seem valid to some I'm sure but not all, at least not me. Those that believe digitol camera's are obsolete are the same that will use their phone for their tracking system. The current digitol camera's are much much better than any phone, sure most belive the Iphone 4 is as good as a digitol camera but anyone that is into photography knows different. Same goes for the current GPS systems vs phones and I'm not just reffering to the 660/665. Just my opinion sorry if we disagree just wanted to get that off my chest.

Digging up an old topic. Has anyone saved the $30 by buying the lifetime updates off ebay? Just wondering if anyone has and if there were any issues with them.

Done so twice and not the same vendors.  You get a gift card with a scratch off that reveals a code.  Log on to Garmin and purchase the map update using the gift card code.  No problem and save a few $$.   :2vrolijk_21:

I got the lifetime update for free when I bought my RT 665. The MoCo has offered this deal around Christmas time for at least the last two years. Hopefully they will continue to - but even if not, the RT is much better for navigation than a cell phone since it can hook into the audio system via the NIM and directions will interrupt whatever you are listening to. And it's weatherproof... unlike my iPhone 5!

If you own a 660 or a 665, the lifetime update is a good deal even at full price. When the software on my Mac tells me it's time to update, I just plug in the 665 and let it run overnight to do the update. Then I'm good to go!

They are to me.

Once,...not too long ago, I was on a road trip and needed gas. Greg Khougaz told me there were no gas stations near,...but my Garmin said there was gas 13 miles away. So we followed the GPS. The paved road turned into a dirt road, which turned into a gravel road, which dead ended in driveway in the middle of nowhere. Some gracious CalTrans road workers were kind enough to get me three gallons from their service yard and I didn't have to push my bike that day.

So, yes. GPS updates are worth it.

Lifetime updates are worth it, and cheaper thru Amazon and a few other places. Smart phones GPS will NEVER replace stand alone units due to cost. The phone uses your data time everyminute you are using it, So take a couple week trip and use your Phone 8 - 10 hours aday and see what the data cost is, not cellular time, data time, the 2gb most plans have standard go very fast when using for GPS.  Garmin or whatever brand will cost you nothing after buying the lifetime update deal. Plus the phones are so fragile, vibration etc is just not something they were made for.

The updates are worth it to me, not just because the maps change a little, but it also updates the gas stations, restaurants, motels etc.

Try to do mine a couple of times a year.
