Buy the lifetime update.  And yes over the span of several years (depending on where you ride), the new maps are better.

Takes a lot of time but the lifetime is worth it.

Ga3min's will be obsolete in the next year two. Smart phones have GPS maps real time. Only thing missing is the cradle to hold it to your bike.

Yep, the lifetime update package is worth the price.  I have it on both my 660's.  With all the new roads and construction going around, it's nice to get updates on what's new...

If you look at the maps and data packages that most of the smartphones use, it's the same as Garmin's; NAVTEQ.  Other than live traffic and accidents, the map data isn't any newer than what you have on the Garmin, if you keep it updated.  It's a very time consuming process to update and add new information to the database.  I don't foresee smartphones taking the place of in-dash or add-on GPS's.   JMHO.

I only see the lifetime update available for my 665.

I like my Garmin and havent found anything better including apps for my I-phone but my concerns are with the inability to update my Quest wich I still like due to its small size fits nice on teh sefb. Latest map for the quest is 2006??? Then I seem to remember members here saying garmin is going to drop Mapquest, dont know if this is true but would be a concern for sure.

I have a RoadTech Quest myself, but can no longer get support for it either, and beings Garmin discontinued production of the Quest in favor of the Zumo, they've stopped providing map updates for it.  Unfortunately, that's just the way business.  No body would buy the new stuff if they kept providing updates.  I like my Quest too, but I do like the size of the Zumo screen much more.

For Me: buying new hardeware has nothing to do with not being able to utilize my old hardware still if it offers a purpose. I have a purpose for both and would like to purchase an updated map for both. My Pc's can be updated I am currently on an early version Dell "core 2 duo" that came with XP pro and now has run for some time with Win 7 and runs quite well, I have other Pc's and still purchase hardware when they need to be upgraded. I see other GPS manufatctures that make their products upgradable for some time.

Just sayin: Would have been nice if Garmin would have made the Quest upgradable for a while longer as it is a very usefull peice of hardware.

If you're traveling where you need the GPS, you'll want/need the most current maps, eh? Compared to the cost of all the stuff we hang on our CVOs, this is a bargain.

X2 with that statement... if they did then they would have to make the screens (on smartphones) a lot larger for us "older" drivers/riders. :D :D As it is now they are continuously making phones smaller and smaller... and for that reason I can't see them totally replacing stand alone GPS with larger screens. JMHO.

Folks have been saying that the new "smart" phones are going to replace all sorts of other hardware, but I view that as just more of the BS that floats so freely these days.  I remember reading some time back that smart phones and tablets would quickly kill the market for mainstream desktop PC's.  Well, next time you need to type up a twenty page document real quick let me know how that worked out on your smart phone.

There is a big difference between being able to use one device to perform many functions, and that device being the best for performing all those various functions.  Maybe someday, but someday hasn't gotten here yet, and I don't see it peeking around the corner either.

I agree, the quest is a nice little navigation device.  You can try and contact Garmin and see if they have any CD's left in the warehouse.  I believe the last update for the quest was 2008.  I think that's the last version mine has.  It's been awhile since I've used it.  Heck, I still have my old Garmin 2610 (the "brick"), with it's last update from 2006.  I really liked that GPS also, now it's just a door stopper. :(

I am not sure who provides the lifetime updates for Garmin, but I was at Costco the other day looking at a Garmin with "lifetime" updates and traffic.  I noticed a little asterisk by the word "lifetime."  Here is what it says:

²Free Lifetime Map Updates entitle you to receive up to 4 map data updates per year, when and as such updates are made available on the Garmin website, for this specific Garmin product only until this product’s useful life expires or Garmin no longer receives map data from its third party supplier, whichever is shorter. The updates you receive will be updates to the same geographic map data originally included with your Garmin product when originally purchased. Garmin may terminate your Lifetime Map Updates at any time if you violate any of the terms of the End User License Agreement accompanying your nüvi product.

³Free Lifetime Traffic Updates may not be transferred to another person or another Garmin product. Lifetime traffic extends for the useful life of your Garmin traffic receiver (as long as you own a compatible Garmin GPS) or as long as Garmin receives traffic data from its traffic supplier, whichever is shorter. Traffic content not available for all areas. See www.navteq.com/rdstraffic for traffic coverage areas and www.garmin.com/traffic/fm/navteq.html for program License Agreement containing complete terms and conditions.

Now I am trying to figure out what "lifetime" means.
