S & S Tribute 145 CI

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this.....if not feel free to move it no worries....

K...so....going to ask what is probably a dumb question....and feel free to point that out as well if need be...but it's one of those that I have to ask because maybe there's something I'm not aware of or thinking about.  Long story short is....I'm trading bikes with a guy who has a custom built Pro Street bike with an S & S Tribute motor and Baker trans in it.  He wants my 2011 SG, his bike appraised at 95k real value, 105k replacement cost, it's simply gorgeous!!!  I've always used Mobile One V-Twin in my CVO's along with RedLine Shockproof heavy and MTL, mainly from recommendations garnered here.  I know there are varying opinions, but on to the question.  Is there a reason why this may not be a good choice for the type of motor or tranny that's in this bike ?  Just relying on the experience and knowledge on this forum to steer me clear of a possible mistake before I might make one.  I have no idea what's been used in the bike prior yet, and it has about two "ridden" miles on it, the rings were seated on a dyno.  I know it's not a CVO bike or a Harley.....but I trust your guy's opinion.

Red Line is probably the #1 brand used at AHDRA races (All Harley Drag Racing Assoc.) with Amsoil being one that is also used on race bikes.

I think you'll be fine with either. :2vrolijk_21:

Are you getting that bike as a show bike (commonly referred to as "trailer queens") or as a second bike to ride?  Just curious.  By the way......I've been to a lot of rallys, bike shows, etc. over the past forty + years and I've not saw a bike yet that I'd pay more than $50k for and probably only a couple of bikes in that catagory.

Hey JCZ...how you doing friend.  Getting it for a second bike to ride....probably only when the weather is nice which is SO unlike my style...but this bike is so nice I don't think I could bring myself to weather it in the state I live in.  Rode it a few days ago and it's a beast for sure, but surprisingly rideable.  Planning on trading my 2010 CVO Ultra in on a 2012 SG as I like what I see and I can't live with a SG now that I've had one.  The new SG would be my daily rider.

Beautiful bike.  I recall S&S made 45 of the 145" motors for it's 45th anniversary several years ago.  I don't recall if the motor ever made it into production.  So I guess my question would be, if something went wrong with the motor, could you get parts?  I assume you can but it might be something to think about.

Yeah I've thought about the parts issue if something was to happen....I just can't turn it down.....the bike is so nice pictures don't do it justice.

As the story goes....motors were sent out to the top 5 custom builders.....Arlen Ness wanted his motor to be the version with the carb on it so he sent back to S & S the EFI one they gave him....and that's the motor that's in this bike.

I had inquired about the 145 motor at Sturgis. There was like 10 bikes sitting in a row with that motor. I was told the motor would not be  a good motor for longevity. Too much stroke! Pistons are flying! I think it would be awesome to have one but for the price I am not sure? If you were to buy it for a occasional ride The motor is probably fine. If you hammer that 145 I am not too sure about the drivetrain? Does that bike have a baker torque box? I think that's the kind of power Bert was thinking about when he designed the heavy duty trans. Good luck!  :2vrolijk_21:

95k real value? :nixweiss: Value is what you or someone is willing to pay. I think it is a really great looking bike and would make a cool looking second/bar hopper. If you have an extra CVO bike sitting around that you want to trade with...why not! Oh, I use Amsoil.

I've done a total of 5 of those motors, and to date not 1 issue on any of them.  :)
25,000 miles on 1 of them.
John
This is the only 1 I used F.I. on. The others had my modified "G" carbs.

Well....the deal is....."a done deal"  :2vrolijk_21:

As I was riding this monster home I couldn't help but think.....it's too dam bad with the type of talent that's out there in the free world...mother Harley doesn't hire 10 or 20 of them....give them free reign to be creative....and blow the doors right off anything called CVO to date.  Money not an object or concern at this level....Just a celebrated.....yearly.....limited number of "Elite" bikes built to showcase what can be done....and what can be had.....when you get the right people together.  Harley preaches to all the newbs out there......"throw the chains of society and dull repetitive routines off and get out and ride"......how about Harley take some of their own advice and....."throw the chains of the EPA and bottom line financials off and go for broke".....then I snapped back to reality and realized how intoxicating riding a true custom bike can be....it was a nice thought anyhow....

I can say this for anyone that might read this post.  I while back some of the SERK owners were getting hard bags and having them painted to match their bikes...on this forum others were recomending "Paint by Gene" to do the work.....he just happens to live near me and I thought that was pretty cool.  Well it just so happens he's the one who painted this ride....I can't tell you how nice the paint looks on this bike.....pictures don't do it justice....it absolutely explodes in the sun...the shading and metalflake is beyond gorgeous.....it's a sight to see.  My point is...he's as good as they say !!!
