Goldwing vs BMW

http://www.motorcycle.com/shoot-outs/2012-bmw-k1600gtl-vs-2012-honda-gold-wing-shootout-video-91093.html

According to the article, the 'Wing is 136-pounds heavier and makes 25 less horsepower. Torque is too close to call... but they say the 'Wing is more comfortable.

Trunk and saddlebags on the BMW have 31 liters less capacity, but are removable.

Interesting read...

I was suprised at the Wings numbers, 96..hp and 104....tq. Thought they were much higher. What I read from other forums is the beamer is flying out the door at over $5K over msrp. Looks like a fun bike though

Honda claims 118 HP, but that's at the crank. The shaft drive robs a lot of it. I saw another dyno at 95/103, so that sounds about right.

My friend is happy if he gets 36 mpg on his 'Wing. Good thing it holds 6.6 gallons of gas. It's only a 5 speed and it's pretty busy at highway speeds. That bike needs an overdrive gear in the worst way.

Agree on the specs as per magazine articles. According to what I've read, the rune is down a bit on hp but higher torque. Think it was like 90hp and 110lbft. But yes it does need that 6th gear and an item hotly debated.

I guess it depends on your perspective/what you're used to. Yeah, when you're cruising at 70 mph on the 'Wing you are definitely in the powerband... the trade off is fuel milage and a 'busy' feeling. For those of us used to an overdrive gear and huge low end grunt, we'll be reaching for another gear constantly, but if you never had it I guess you don't miss it.

What's interesting from the article... BMW had the luxury of starting with a blank sheet of paper for this new model. As 'long in the tooth' as the Goldwing is, it's still a contender.

I'm sure the new 'Wing they come out with will have a ton of improvements. Electric windshield... 6 speed...

My neighbor John across the street has an '08 Goldwing and I tell you what that is a NICE bike. I rode it and was very impressed. There is a reason it's always rated as one of the BEST touring bikes. My only complaint was that it had linked brakes, something that makes slow speed trail braking difficult as it's always engaging the front brake.

Interseting enough the article kept mentioning the Goldwing and the BMW as the ONLY comfy and powerful touring bikes in it's class. What about the CVO Ultra?

Tried out the K1600GTL and while it had awesome power and handling, we continued our search. At the risk of alienating myself from others on the forum, if we had been able to test ride an 1800 who knows if we would have bought our CVO. But since we were allowed to test ride newer Harleys we found that we really enjoyed the ride. When they broke out the CVO I lost my mind and started signing documents.

Maybe the BMW would have been better if we weren't over 400 lbs combined but we are and the SEUC fits us both very comfortably. Currently I'm in no hurry to sell my 96 GL1500 but once I do back to back testing next year with my SEUC, it's possible the Wing will go away. If the wing was fuel injected and had a 6th gear I would be more apt to keep it and the bagger but after buying the SEUC, I think the Harley will be ridden much much more. The only thing I want to do to the Glide is relocate the TP and maybe some upgrades to the electronics (better speakers and ipod interface). Even the older Wing is very capable and smooth but riding the CVO puts a huge smile on my face and the rumbling puts my soul at ease. I just like bikes and enjoy what each brings to the table. I still like the appearance of the older wing but the SEUG just knocks it out of the ballpark.
