Zumo 550 No Longer Can Hold "Lower 49" Map as of Version 2012.20

Many of you have been aware recently that the Zumo 550's were getting short on storage space when it came to loading map updates. Got an email today that there was an update (2012.20) available so I went and downloaded them only to find out when I tried to install the updates I wasn't able to install the entire lower 49 because of lack of storage space. There is a work around for those that want to continue using their 550's and have all the maps loaded by storing them on your SD card. If you are interested in doing this you will need to go to this thread - Load Maps to an SD Card - updated for 2012.20 maps with MapInstall graphics on the Zumo Forum for directions. For the moment I'm keeping the current map I have installed and will be purchasing a larger SD card (8gb or 16gb) and putting my music and the entire "Full Coverage of North America" on the card w/no maps left on the Zumo itself.

Be aware that the new 'garmin loader' has issues also, was online yesterday to work around it :


Bty - all my tunes are in iTunes , is there a easy way to load music or just rip my cd somehow ?

I cannot find anything about ver 2012.20.  All I can find is 2012.10 which I already have.  :nixweiss:

for Europe 2012.20 is online since 3 weeks.

And if you install the new map you will be asked if would like to give Garmins new "Lifetime Updater" a try: don't, as most users over here experienced 20 and more hours downloads with no result. The old mapupdater ist still availiable as alternative and does the job instead  ;)

There are free Itunes to MP3 converters online. You can also rip any CD you have to MP3. Install the MP3 songs on an SD card intalled in your GPS and you are ready to Rock & Ride.

Yeah, I found the problem.  My lifetime map updates did not transfer over to my replacement unit as Garmin said it would after I registered the unit.  Why should I be surprised?  Anyway the map version does not show up it just wants me to purchase an update.  So I see a phone call to Garmin will be required.

That would cause the problem. >:( :( Can't remember what time zone Garmin is in but try to call them when they first open so you don't have to wait to long.

be carefull, I have found the larger cards will not work.

my SDHC 16G will not work

some will and some won't. I had a 16 GB Kingston micro SD working perfectly.
