Warranty Coverage - Lights?
« on: August 17, 2011, 01:42:15 PM »

I've seen a few posts about troubles with the rear turn signal / break light. The rear right signal light on my SERG just went and i was wondering if anyone has been able to have theirs replaced under the warranty? I have the extended warranty so I'm hoping it's covered.

When mine was still covered by original 2 year warranty, dealer replaced tail/brake light bulb on my 09 twice, the first time I didn't even know it was not working.

My left one went out and was covered under the ESP w/$50 deductible.

Glad to hear that. I called the dealer and they said they have to see the bike before they could / would comment on if it's covered or not. If not it's an hour labour to change it ($100.00) plus the cost of the light ($300).

That's crazy at most it is a 5 minute job to change the light.

They don't simply change the light they "diagnose" the problem. Gotta hook up the bike to their fancy computer, see if I f**k*d with the electrical. Anything to get out of covering the part I guess.

Oh yea, it's not a light, it's a turn signal module.

IF the dealer claims it isn't covered, I would not just quietly accept that pronouncement.  Contact the ESP administrator yourself and make sure they understand that you're not talking about a wear item like a regular bulb, you're talking about a LED lighting module that is supposed to last the life of the motorcycle.

No way I would consider a $300 light assembly a wear item.  Like stated above, they are not bulbs, they are LEDs that should last the life of the bike.  And since it is unlikely that the actual LED is even what has failed, nor is it even a replacable part even if it was, I would say it should definitely be covered by the ESP.

I just checked the list of covered parts on the ESP brochure and the only thing remotely close on the list are Lamp Sockets.  But since the part that holds the Lamp, or LED in this case, is part of the entire light assembly, I would think you could make the argument it is listed as a covered part.

Clearly the ESP brochure needs a CVO supplement, just like the service and parts manuals have.  ;D

Hate to break it to you guys, not covered under ESP,

How do you definitively know it's not covered?

Not sure if you're talking Canadian price or American price.  For what it's worth, here are the part numbers and MSRP (USD)for the current level parts:

USA
69383-09A  LH  Domestic (Red)    $195.95
69407-09A  RH  Domestic (Red)    $195.95

International (Canada, Japan, etc)
69496-09A  LH  (Amber)   $214.95
69518-09A  RH  (Amber)   $214.95

You might notice that the part numbers all indicate a revision from the original release ie. the -A suffix.  That's one good indication of all the problems they had with these things back in "09, and I'd use that in my argument with H-D that they should cover the replacement even though the two year warranty has expired.  Contact them or the Canadian distributor and ask them to cover the replacement if the ESP won't.

Those are Canadian prices. Bike goes in today, guess I'll get the verdict soon.

Oh I'm SO happy right now:

:orange: :apple: :carrot: :jalapeno: :cucumber: :pineapple: :pepper:

My light was covered under the ESP. Not only was the light covered but my original front tire with 25,000 kms was also covered AND an oil leak from the transmission ( guess that one should have been covered.)
