HD SE pro race tuner vs Thunder max
« on: August 19, 2011, 08:15:38 PM »

I have a 2011 RoadGlide Ultra CVO it is in the shop for 1000 mile service. . The service department is installing a cat less head pipe. Vance and Hines ovals. They where going to go with a screaming Eagle street tuner (street legal tunes only). But after some research I told them I wanted to go with Screaming Eagle pro tuner (none street legal tunes) and you don't have to have a Harley's USB key to make changes . Is this a good Tuner. Or should I go with Thunder max Auto tune. Thunder max $1000  vs $450 for the SE pro tuner. I think The pro tuner has a smart tune feature also.  They shop is waiting for the pipes (slip ons) to ship to them. so they wont get to my bike until Wednesday 8-24-11.
 All answers would be appreciated.

The problem with (some? most? all?) HD dealers is they only recommend  HD tuner products, although many will install other types.  My experience with HD dealers is they don't really have the in-house experience to do really good tuning--it's the independents who specialize in that area who are the best.  One that's not too far from you is http://www.jarzperformance.com/ in Abbotsford, British Columbia.  I'm sure there are others around.

The usual advice from this board is "Find a person in your area who is a good tuner, and get whichever product (TTS, Rev Perf EMS, SEPST, Power Commander, ThunderMax) he recommends...and read the posts in this section that compare the different products.

Many people like the Fullsac Stage 1 pkg of TTS w/ Fullsac map, x-pipe and CVO muffler baffles--no dyno time or $$ required after installation.

A lot of people here don't like Thundermax b/c they've had much trouble with both the product and the customer svc.

Some people are dissatisfied with the SEPST b/c the dealers just load a canned map that may or may not be a good fit for intake, pipes, and cans on your bike; OTOH, if you find a good tuner-person who likes the SE, it will be fine.

A fairly new product, the RevPerf EMS, has very good reviews here and is appreciated by those who just want to install it and ride, w/o having to do a lot to it, and it will self-adjust (within reason) if you change pipes, a/f, mufflers.

Great summary DC.
Only thing I will add is that the RevPerf EMS is not available for 2011 bikes. (unless they became available this week)

I am using the TTS Mastertune on my 2011.5.
Good luck with whatever you decide.
Your bike looks great.
