Backfire Thru Intake
« on: August 27, 2011, 01:55:12 PM »

I have an 06 SEUC, and just this summer it started to backfire thru the intake.
It will do it on takeoff when the bike is not totally up to operating temperature.
It usually does it 2/3 times, then it's OK. It doesn't seem that the air temperature
has any effect. What should I be looking for?
I have 2/1 D&D, SERT and high flow intake. These are the only changes I've made.

Cold engine coughing up a "hairball"  due to not enough fuel to meet power requirement?

or it is igniting BTDC.

either due to knock or timing.

Since it is a "cold" engine,

I would suspect a tune could help.

Maybe one of the injectors is partially clogged?  Certainly wouldn't hurt to run a bottle of injector cleaner through the system on your next fill-up.

Maybe your compensator's giving up?

Does it ever backfire thru the intake when starting it?

Starts & stops with no funny sounds, but I'll keep an ear on it.
Today, it did it once, after it was warm! I just had it dyno tuned
about 1500 miles ago, and I never had the problem before!

bingo. do you have bungs in the D&D 2-1  for 02 sensors? they will be plugged if it is a newer pipe.
if it is a older pipe it wont have the bungs.
that said ....if no bungs, and the tuner didnt take the necessary steps to sample each cyl then it isnt going to be right.
if there were two sniffers, the muffler would have to come off.the tubing ran into each head pipe, then the muffler slid back over the tubing to get them in there correct.
if there was one sniffer. it would have  to transfer to each cly, and basically be tuned twice. once for each cyl.

Sounds good, but I had the bike tuned with the pipes back in 06, and I just had it retuned
because of backfiring on decel. Like I said, it just started?

If you just had it retuned 1500 miles ago. And the problem started then, that is where you go looking. Your 06 tune is history at this point.
now as axial mentioned it could be,if the 06 tune was fine for all this time, and then you started having decel pop. It could have been an intake leak, or even a exhaust leak that caused it. Then you had it tuned to fix it?
If it was slight leak and slight decel pop, this can be corrected with some more fuel thrown in that decel area. But would cause tuning/running issues .
just trying to help you narrow it down. If it didn't go down like that continue to give more info and maybe we can narrow it down.

Just an update on my problem!! Good old E10, intake o'rings shot.
Talking to a REAL engine master, says lets get a can of carb cleaner
and start her up. After it's running, he sprays a little on the front
cylinder head intake, and the bike dies..........We need to replace the
intake o'rings. Now it runs like a charm.
