Hd garage door opener
« on: August 28, 2011, 11:34:27 PM »

I got one of these for my 2012 roadglide wire and installed everything per instruction, tested and everythin works per instructions. The problem I have is that it has VERY short range and does not open garage door when its shut and im outside. When im inside everything works good. Any help would be great.

How close to the actual door opener did you install the H-D receiver?  You need to keep the receiver as far from the actual opener as possible, more so with some brands of openers than others.
------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE
For some brands of garage door opener systems, it may
be necessary to plug in the Harley-Davidson receiver at a
location some distance from the door opener. With those
systems, if the Harley-Davidson receiver is plugged in too
close to the original opener receiver, the effective transmission
range may be significantly reduced on both systems
------------------------------------------------------------

For my installation I actually wired a new outlet in the ceiling to one side of the door and about a foot in from the door to avoid interference problems, and it still resulted in less range on my regular door opener.  Genie seems to be one of the brands that has interference issues with the Harley receiver.  See if your regular transmitters in your cars still have the same range as before.

Move the receiver as far away from the opener as possible and see what happens.  Initially, just power it from an existing outlet with an extension cord so you can temporarily move it to different locations and check the results.  Once you find an acceptable location, consider running a line and installing an outlet where you need it.  If it still doesn't work, you might have a defective product.

Have you got the HD receiver mounted as high in the garage as possible?  That too can make a difference.  Mine's on the ceiling of the basement, about 6 ft from the door opening.

With the garage door open, how far away can you have the bike and still close the door with the transmitter?  If it works fine at 30 feet with the door open, but won't work with the door closed, try extending the antenna wire outside the door.

You will that one day you're heading to the garage and it's starting to pour !

I've had some issues with my new one with a new garage door opener,
have to get up there and check it out, the unit is getting the signal from the bike
but not sending it every time to the door

I think it's in the wires so I'll work on that...

When you try it from outside have someone inside
to listen, the HD unit should click, if it does then
it's not signaling the door, if it doesn't click
then the signal isn't getting to it.

The best approach is to use one of the transmitters that comes with the actual garage door opener, thus eliminating that separate receiver from Harley altogether.  On my '99 Dyna, I bought one of the mini transmitters for my opener, opened it up so I could solder in two wires for a remote momentary switch I mounted in the fuel tank canopy, sealed it up and mounted it to the back of the headlight shell tucked under all the wiring and out of sight.  Worked just like the ones in my cars, with the same range, and didn't even have to change the battery the five years it was in there.  I would have to think a similar approach would work great with an RG, with the transmitter hidden in the glovebox and a simple momentary button switch mounted on the fairing.

It' one of those things that you don't realize you wanted/needed until you get one and use it.  It really is handy.  My receiver is plugged into an outlet in the ceiling...same one the Genie head unit is plugged into, about 3-4 ft from the head unit, and 6 or so feet from the GD opening.  I liked mine so much back in '06 that I installed a transmitter onto my Vrod as well.

..............how about hooking it up to switched power and also adding a dropping resistor in conjuntion with the momentary contact switch.....never need to worry about batteries.....as an afterthought, the remote I'm planning to use has two buttons on it, so I can open/close either garage door.

Where did you install the transmit module in the fairing. The module has an antenna and you mustn't block it. I have the one from my 07 SE Ultra in my 11 RG Ultra and it works from half a block away.

I installed mine next to the door opener box, plugged it in the same ceiling outlet the garage door is plugged in ,about eight feet from the floor. Works like a charm. I open my garage door from the street , even before getting on the driveway!!!

Jeez, my HD GDO works a good 150 to 200 feet away - I'm not kidding!  I'm on an acre, and the house is up on a hill, with a side facing garage on the other side of the house with windows towards the front of the house and I usually flip the LB/HB as I hit the property line, and by the time I get to the garage, the door is already up, and I pull right up on the lift on the fly.

I'd definitely double check the connections then test a number of different locations with the antenna.  My unit on the Harley is mounted below the left speaker, and horizontal support, fwiw.

Yeah I tried moving it all over in the garage. One thing I did notice is that when the hd reciever is plugged in my car garage opener looses alot of range. Does having a keypad outside the garage and sensors for the door have any effect on killing the range? I am totally lost on this and dont get it.

See my first post in this thread.  Yes, if you have a garage door opener that doesn't play well with the Harley receiver, the range will be affected for both your regular car transmitters as well as your bike transmitter.  I imagine it has to do with the actual frequency used by your particular opener, or perhaps the amount of internal shielding in the opener.

Btw, the exterior keypad doesn't make any difference.
