Dyno Tune and injectors
« on: June 07, 2006, 10:57:39 PM »

Thought I’d pass along my dyno tune info and something about the injectors. First, apparently there is a service bulletin out on the fuel injectors. I don’t know if it would involve all of our bikes or not, could be some are OK, mine was picked up on March 1st. It came with 8 degree injectors and the correct ones are 25 degree. That’s the spray width. Anyway, the 8 degree models supposedly cause popping on deceleration. The dealer replaced them. They commented the popping could have been tuned out with the race tuner but it was better to get the correct injectors anyway. The popping is gone now.

The dyno tune, using a SuperFlow WinDyn V2.3, with the race tuner gained me 5 hp and 4 pounds of torque. The race tuner with map 36, thanks again to FR8TRN for the map, was loaded on the ECM before I picked up the bike. I don’t know what my gain was from stock since I started with map 36. I have V&H oval slip on’s and the stage one air cleaner (SERT also). I got two versions of the dyno graphs, one is for the SuperFlow dyno they used and the other is corrected for the Dynojet version. The Superflow showed a peak hp of 80.2 and the Dynojet peaked at 94hp.

I’ll try and get the graphs scanned and posted as soon as I can find a scanner.

Anyone else heard of the injector service bulletin?

There's info on this site that posts the bulletin ( no suprise, this site has everything). My understanding of it was that the 2006 103's had the 25 degree injectors already. The bulletin was a fix for 2006 88's with cold start problems and replaced the 8 degree injectors with 25's.

Just got wind of the injector issues today. I dropped by to discuss another topic with my service tech. He told me about the injectors and that MoCo was confirming, but not planning a recall. Supposedly, it is affecting up to 30% of the efi twin cams. [smiley=oops.gif]

Another issue that I have experienced with the haze, is a bad ground connection at the fuel pump. I endured several months of the cough spitting, etc. at startup. It was very irregular meaning it would do it only once or twice a week. My tech finally got wind of the ground problem through his contact with a dealership in Florida and in California.

Long story short is this... Moco knows there are some flhtcuse out there with a sloppy spade connection at the fuel pump. When it loses ground, and then regains it, the pump loads again. The excess fuel causes the cough and spit. The fix was to go into the fuel tank, make the proper ground connection( I believe there are two connectors).

This probably sounds strange, but after we made the correction (two months and 600 miles ago) it has not cough a single time. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Ken, thanks for the info. That's pretty much what I heard but didn't know the percentage of bikes involved. The dyno tuner claims he didn't make any changes for my cold start issue or the popping, just changed the injectors, starts great now when cold and no more popping. I got the race tuner map file after he was done so I’ll compare it to the stock map 36 to see just what he did. The part number for the new injectors is listed as 27709-06A on my warranty sheet.

Thanks also for the ground info, that one could save a lot of time and headaches if it happens to one of us as well.

Thanks - Greg

What I'm wondering is whether or not this injector issue is also the cause of many of the problems on the '05 SEEGS (such as mine).  Rough, low rpm idle until up to full operating temp, stumbles and surging below 2500 rpm, and now with the SE mufflers, AC, and download, same idle issue plus popping during shifts and decel.  Kind of strange that H-D never addressed this with the '05 - I guess they figured we would all buy a $450 SERT to fix their problem and enrich them at the same time.  Now that they won't have that option (SERT) anymore, thanks to the EPA, I guess they'll have to start addressing some of the driveability issues they've just pawned off on us in the past.  About time, IMHO.

Jerry,

The popping during decel is suppose to be one of the main issues. Also, will cause a lean mixture. The guys and gals using the closed loop fuel management modules would not feel the effects as dramatically. The modules will try to adjust for the condition.

It could well be the issue. If indeed there are 30% of the efi's being affected...that is a few bikes. It is also a few bucks out of MOCO's pocket. My biggest dissapointment since buying the Cuse in October is the lack of MOCO balls. But, how I love the bike! Is this the love-hate thing I have been reading about?

Ken,

That's exactly where this comes from:
"Jerry - 2005 Cherry SEEG   H-D and me - a classic love / hate relationship. Current score: love 45, hate 45, bewildered 10."

About half the time I love the bike, and the rest of the time I wish I'd never bought the sucker.  And I am bewildered by the MoCo and their lack of concern for the customers and their inability to provide a decent running stock EFI bike.  EFI has been around for decades, and you would think they would be able to enlist help from one of the auto companies if they can't figure it out themselves.

Thought I'd attach the Service Bulletin again in this thread - hard to find for some reason with the search feature.

Jerry, I thank you also.  I'm gonna check mine tomorrow. I have the same symptoms you have, but mine's on the 04, with no SERT.
Where do you find the Service Bulletins?  I'd love to see the ones for the 04s.

Until recently, you could find many service and p&a bulletins at this site:  http://www.harleyhog.co.uk/index.htm  .  Unfortunately, the MoCo started threatening the fellow who runs the site so he had to shut down all the links to official H-D documents.  I had downloaded many of the bulletins, but only a few survived a major computer crash.  This was one I had saved on a different computer.
