5th gear whine and valve train noise
« on: August 29, 2011, 10:24:58 PM »

Hi, just got back from a 3500 mile trip from Simi Valley, Ca. to Lake Louise B.C. and back. My 09 SEUC ran fantastic with passenger and luggage (Fulsac stage one kit, 1.75 baffles, HD/K&N free flowing air filter no pinging at all even on the hottest days). I had to divert my trip when I got to Browning Montana to Big Sky Hd in Great Falls Mt. because the original front tire was cupped so bad I did not want to continue on my original route to the 93 south because of all the curves.( it looked fine when I left home) The dealership was great, the front tire was replaced under warranty and they cleaned my bike, and refused to take a tip for the cleaning. So I need to give a shout out to them. However, here are my questions: Has anyone ever gotten the noisy valve train and 5th gear whine fixed under warrranty? At about 75 in 6th gear it was a dream, but other times the valve train noise and 5th gear whine was really getting on my nerves. I have read some of the posts about putting in S&S  adjustable pushrods and loading them at .140-.150, but I was wondering if anyone had these two issues resolved by their dealer while under warranty. Thanks in advance. CAHDBIKER

If you are not already using it Redline Shockproof Heavy in the Trans will help with the 5th gear whine.
You will still know when you are in 5th but it is a huge improvement.

I do know a few that had the pistons and cylinders replaced and the valve train noise is gone, it was piston slap.
The stock cylinders are pretty stable parts but the original bore and hone leaves some to be desired, clearances and non-true barrels is the issue.
Redline Shockproof helped my gear noise.

There's not alot you can do about the 5th gear whine on the 2009's. In 2010 they swapped out the straight cut 5th gear in the tranny to a helical cut which eliminated that 5th gear whine. Short of swapping out the gear, there's not much you're going to do that will eliminate that whine.

Hi,
As the previous post says, could be piston slap, too much clearance between piston skirt and cylinder wall, not unusual with 110`s , fitted s+s lifters with travel limiters, HD SE adjustables and andrews 54s, was quieter  but still noisy, after researching found a comment from S+S about the lifters, it stated after getting the pushrods set to the correct lenght, many engine builders like shorten the push rods by an extra half a turn, decided to try this, WOW, what a difference, can hear my Fat Cat now.

A Baker DD-7 helped mine, it did away with the whine, the clunk, and the mushy shifts......sometimes I forget I'm riding an H-D !  :2vrolijk_21:

Heatwave, I asked my dealer about swapping out 5th gear from a 2010 and the tech there said it won't fit because of some other things they changed in the tranny. Maybe I will call Baker and see if they have a cure other than replacing the entire gear cluster. CAHDBIKER

The shockproof took care of the whine and the shifts have improved 100%. It did take awhile though.

Interesting, my 09 has more of a clacking in 5th unless your over 60 mph. First gear however sounds like a damn space ship whirling noise even with the clutch pulled in.  I never hear of anyone with this.  Anyone?  Using shockproof also.

Trippy, regarding your comment on the pushrods: wouldn't you want to make them longer as per some of the posts on this site to make up for engine expansion. I am happy that it worked for you, but I wanted to make sure this was not a typo and I was understanding that you actually set your pushrods to spec and then made them shorter? Is that correct? Thanks CAHDBIKER

Hi, Yes , what your saying sounds right, but if you look on the S+s website, although they don't quite understand why, it appears the extra half turn clearance seems to allow the pumping operation of the lifter to work better, as I said I was sceptical myself, but it works, Go figure!
