If my bike sits for a day or two when I first kick in the starter it sometimes cranks for 5 seconds or so and I let off the starter. As soon as I press the starter the second time it fires right up. What is wrong?

Possibly a marginal charging system or charge on the battery. All the current is going to your starter and not enough to light up the EFI and ignition. You might have pressurized the FI the first go around and when you come back to hit it again you have fuel to the injectors and the pump isn't having to draw current away from the starter and ignition. Just my guess.

Bike is three years old with 45,000 miles. I guess a new battery is about time.

Hey that's pretty decent battery life. Yepper sounds like it might be about that time.

Battery probably not a bad idea, you may also want to check the fuel line pressure make sure you dont have a hole in that gas line in the tank.   At 45k also a good time to change the fuel filter while your there.

Good call, I forgot about reading that this was an issue. More than likely the case than a weak battery...or a combo.

I don't copy that on a new battery....check voltage during starting.  My 08 CUSE has 52,000 miles and still on original battery...fires right off every time.
