SE290E cam
« on: September 04, 2011, 10:27:03 AM »

Last week when I was driving my 2010 SEultra through the 115 degree desert in Az. My engine started having a lot of noise around 2800 rpm. When I got to town, I stopped at the dealer. I was told that the front lifter (exhaust) had gone over the hill. After they tore down the engine they said that the cams and the bearings were scored and the whole valve system was going to be replaced.
Anyway the engine had a SE255 cam, but the replacement is a SE290E. The dealer told me that I should expect a little better performance from the bike as it had a better duration. So far I have hot been able to get any info on this cam.
I have noticed by the seat of the pants (very scientific) that I think I have a bump in power around 3500 rpm. I also noticed that it has a nice lope at an idle that was not there before.
I'm going to check with Steve at fullsack to see if the ECM needs to be changed, he set it up originally.

If someone could tell me more about this cam I would appreciate it.

Harley doesn't list a SE290E cam (see attachment for a list of all available SE cams).  Perhaps what they said was SE259E?

I have a question.  Did you ask these folks to substitute a different cam than stock, or are you saying they just did this on their own?  That is not how any normal dealership I've ever heard of does warranty work, so something about this is either going over my head or just a little flaky.  Do you have a work order copy that lists the part numbers they used?

At times I think I'm lisdexic. the cam number is 259E just like you said.
The explanation from the dealer was that this was the replacement ? Or maybe thats the only one they had. Not sure but the bill did say 259E not 290E like I first said. Fist mistake I ever made. The list you sent was very helpfull.

Whatever... I'm sure happy with the dealer.

Thanks

There is nothing similar about these (2) cams so I would suggest having the tune checked out.  IMHO there would be differences in the fuel/timing requirements for both of these cams.

Gerry is right that is not SOP and they now have installed a "Race Only" part that could technically void the engine portion of your nationwide warranty, if not taken back to that same dealer, assuming there is time left on your contract.
Fullsack may want to retune it now that the cam timing is changed

After looking at the specs of the new cam I believe that I'll have to depend on Steve at Fullsac He has treated me, and my bike, better than I would have expected from most any merchant I have ever encountered.
My bike has 8 months left on the warranty anyway so from then on I'll have to rely on local shops and my own ability.
I'm not too worried about the warranty issue at this point. Maybe I should be... OH well. What to do?

Just a little off topic comment.
Since "Jerry" GRC has over 6K post and usually signs his name to most of them I'm surprised he could be mistaken for "Gerry."
I know, a simple mistake but in a cam/head/assembly world where the attention to the smallest details make a big difference I find this interesting.
Especially after "Jerry's" 6503 post.

After being married 38 years and working in the auto industry 35 years, I answer to pretty much anything Chip.  Moron, chithead, azzhole, dumbazz, pr$ck, etc.   ;D

On that cam swap, while it may work OK as is, I would think, just looking at the specs, that it would need a little more compression to help regain the lost bottom end from the much later intake close and the overlap.  Should pull stronger in the top half of the range, but that's not exactly optimal for most Touring bike riders.  Btw, I noticed in the latest SE catalog that the SE259E is supposedly street legal in 2011 and later Touring 103's and 110's (pending regulatory approvals).  If true, maybe we will see a switch to higher compression and the 259 cam as the new standard parts in the future?

We had a mechanic at my local dealer that always was trying to get me to go with the 259e cams. Everytime I came by there he would put the sales pitch on me. I heard 2 bikes there that he had put the 259's in. They sounded good. Made good power on the dyne too. I always said it looked like it needed more compression. Glad it worked out for you.

I'm kinda anxious to see this one on my dyno. Its not a cam I would ever recomend for a touring ride, but it should make some big top end numbers!
How big of a TQ hit on the bottom? That will be the real discovery. Kinda had my eye on this cam for my 120R when I decide to detune it for Touring duty.

Steve,

How have you been? I have installed the 259E cams, along with the HD Forged 10.5:1 pistons, Fulsac X Pipe with the 2" baffles in the stock CVO mufflers tuned with the TTS you provided. Tuned by Ben at JARZ Performance in Abbotsford, B.C. Bike dynod at 112.34 and Torque at 113.30. Next step is to buy a set of SE 110 Heads and have them "tweaked",  and see what happens. Bike 2010 CVO ULTRA.

I am going down to Phoenix around 2nd week of October hoping to miss the snow. I will drop by for a visit sometime within the next few months to see what you are up to.

Hey Leo!
Doing well thanks.
Any pinging issues with that combo? Maybe not up north. The 2.25 cores would bump both HP and TQ a few points.
Havasu will be nice in October, should be under a 100 deg by then. You sure have the life my friend. Ride safe.

Steve

There was some pinging especially in the heat and some parts of the US, driving north from Phoenix and Sturgis. Boy you guys have some real chitty fuel. After getting it tuned no more pinging and it has been in what is hot for us 30 deg C., 90 deg F. approximately, now to get a set of heads. I am also following the developments of the 120R engine on here and Harley Tech Talk, maybe next year.
