Ear Plugs

I think I'm finally going to bite the bullet and get us some ear plugs of some type.  Spending a fortune is not in the cards right now, so what are folks using that still allows you to hear stuff through the headset, but blocks those noises that make your ears ring after running at speed for longish periods of time?  There are a million variations out there.  We wear FF helmets at all times.  It's the wind noise that's doing it, IMO, and not the pipes.

The kind they can make exactly for you are so very comfortable, you can keep them in your ears for hours with no negative side effects.
Other than that Terry, I've never tried any.
For the riding lawn mower, we just use the home depot kind - you can get corded ones so you won't loose them for $3 - $5.

Years ago I had custom molded ear plugs with brass ports built in them that could be opened and closed to relieve pressure with just the twist of a finger. They were VERY expensive. They were stolen out of my windshield pouch by theiving crows at Yellowstone. So on the way back I stopped off at the Ace Hardware store in Jackson and bought some $1.99 yellow soft rubber ear plugs. Those work just as well as my high cost ones. I rode for years with those till one day I dropped them on the road. So I stopped off at the next hardware store and bought another set for $1.99.

Been using Radians for a long time now. http://www.radians.com/main/p-282-radians-custom-molded-earplugs.aspx   A short video on the site gives a really good description of what they are and how to use them.  They are do-it-yourself custom molded to your ears, so the stay put and work great with helmets.  Cuts WAY down on the wind noise.  You can get them for about $12.00 per pair on ebay.  Also from Cabela's and other similar locations.

Here's what pissed me off. I walk back to the bike, and a German tourist with a video camera walks over and says he saw a crow "fly over, open the pouch, take something out and fly over there". I asked why he didn't shoo it away. He said he was "too busy getting it all on camera". I wanted to Goose Step all over his head.

Later a ranger said theft by animals is common. Seems all the birds and rodents know where we keep our snacks. They find lots of "stolen" gloves and sunglasses laying about. I learned my lesson.

Always ride with them when on the highway since I wear a half helmet, once the wind is blocked from your ears, the stereo is heard better, I had mine custom made and are very comfortable.  :2vrolijk_21:

I buy my earplugs at the same store where I buy ammo...  They mold to your ear.  I replace them every few months.   Not sure I have to, but after a few months of sweating, etc., it just seems like a good idea...

I use so-called "musician" ear plugs, custom molded. You can get the them through an audiologist.  They knock down the DB while allowing you to hear conversation.  On the highway, they greatly improve my ability to hear music, including lyrics. Not cheap, but with known damage wind and exhaust noise can cause, I've decided that my hearing might be important to me in the future (depending on the day).  I now see my earplugs almost as important as my helmet.

Try Mack's pillow soft ear plugs.  I get them from Wal-Mart in the ear care section.     I think they are less than five bucks for six pair.   I wear them in a half helmet and hear the radio ok.    Not sure how they will work with the full face.    I rarely ride without them.   They are definately a comfort item.

I have the $75 custom made silicon versions and can say the foam ones at the drug store are better.  I get orange ones with a bulge at on one end (insert the other end).  You can get a plastic box of about 24 for $5 and toss each pair as they get soiled.  Gets rid of wind noise regardless of helmet worn.  You'll find riding much more relaxing.  You do need to insert them correctly but that is easy.

Buy a box of these every few years. Give a lot away because they are the best I have found. Less than $.50/pair. 120 pair in a box.

I have the custom ear molds and many other types but these are cheap and available. Just stuff a few bags in every jacket, car, bag on the bike. Never leave home without them.

After years of using foam plugs and often having one go slightly out of seal with no way to restore the quiet other than stop and re-fit it, I got a set of custom-molded ones at Sturgis.  It's been about five years and I would buy them at twice the price ($80 I believe it was).  No comparison for me, they go in the same every time, never move and I can still hear everything I need to.

You caused a little water spit Mark.  Image in my head of a guy with a shop rag hanging out of his pocket and dirty coveralls holding a Phillips screwdriver against my head to adjust those things in :huepfenlol2: .
