Hey take a close look when you get a chance.  The more of us that have a documented problem the more likely we can get a paid replacement if needed, and we'll all have chrome inner primaries for free.

I'm hopeful it is not that common since I haven't even laid hands on my bike yet.

But I wouldn't mind having a chrome inner primary.

sledge, I have scrutinized my 09 and I can't find any defects in the paint anywhere. Maybe it was painted on a Wednesday.CAHDBIKER

How is that going to happen?   :nixweiss:

But for the record......the paint on my bike is much nicer than my car or my truck.  The paint on my bike motor is much nicer than the paint on my car or truck motor.   :2vrolijk_21:

Have read that the chrome inner primary costs the same as the non-chrome one.  If that is true then someone with defective paint can get the chrome inner primary during the swapout.  If I have to go through the process I am sure as heck going insist upon a chrome replacement.

And I am not the type to let a problem like this continue with no work toward getting it fixed.  They will hear from me and my attorney for years if need be 'till they make it right.

Still hopeful it is isolated to a few bikes and not the majority.

I just wonder how many of these 'bad' engine paint reports are actually caused by owners using cleaning chemicals. I know of one owner that used oven off or easy off (cant remember the name of that stuff) cleaning boot marks off his exhaust and over sprayed on his engine case, his paint peeled off... He put a claim with Harley and thy fixed it...  Just saying,, (IMO) maybe not all, but i know there a few caused by owners..

That's a possibility but surely most of us who ride have been at it long enough to know better than to use any type of caustic cleaners.

22 votes so far and the majority say their case paint is ok.  Not enough votes yet to really tell the tale though.

It will be great if we can get a couple hundred votes, then the problem ones may have less impact on the percentages, I hope.

By the way the weather is beautiful down here on the Gulf Coast, 70 something, clear skies.  I hear my bro's riding by on Beach Boulevard.  I am going bonkers.  Need to ride!  Mine is getting picked up today at 2:30 in Kenosha.  Should get it by first week in October.  The waiting is killing me.

Also found out the prev owner put on the deluxe TP hinges and the tourpak rack led light.  Didn't even list them in his description.  He dressed it up nicer than a Thanksgiving turkey!

I posted a couple years ago about the powder coating on the inner primary flaking off on the leading edge of the case, '08 SERK Annie.  This I'm sure was from stone chips of some sort, but a good powder coating should not do that.

The dealer service manager said that the inner in Granite was the same as the Chrome one so without any additional cost to me I ended up with the chrome inner primary.  I think he said that they both listed for the same $300.00.

I did a quick search for the thread that I had posted pictures on, but didn't make a hit.  In that same time frame there were quite a few problems with inner primary and engine cases flaking powder coating.

Reno Harley replaced the engine and trans case free of charge for me on my 08 FXDSE2.

They had 4 small flakes.

They treated you right.

Looks like the poll so far shows about 70% or more have no problems with case (and engine) paint.

Need many more votes though.  A couple hundred would be nice to settle the numbers out.  I assume since a lot of folks don't post here unless they have some sort of question or problem the number of good paint jobs is a much higher percentage.

We'll see how the numbers behave over time.

Paint is ok numbers going up!

So far looks like the 08's and 09's had a bit of a problem, with only one member each voting for probs for 10 and 11.  (update:  more now) May be more for earlier years but I didn't go back farther than 08 in my poll.  It could also be that there are more members here with bikes from those years.

Getting better data all the time but only conclusion that can be drawn so far is that most don't have a problem (yet).

I made this poll so you can change your vote if your paint starts going bad.  More from '09 than any other year so far.  Unless anyone obects I'd like to keep it going 'till we get at least a hundred votes.

Thanks

30%+ bad case paint so far here.  Pretty crappy quality control.  Why the heck do we all insist on buying HD when they seem to continually slap us with substandard workmanship?
