I have had the same problem with my bike and a friend experienced the same problem with his 06 Ultra.  We were up at americade in Lake George New York and road in a couple group ride events and the goldwinger that was leading the ride asked if that was us transmitting because he could not make out what we were saying, stating it was over-driven.  Other HD bikes have also said they can hardly understand my transmissions, so it is not limited to HD or HD vs. Honda.  Anyway, my dealer is now replacing my cb module and I hope to have it back in a couple days to test it out. 8-)

What are your plans? Are you just meeting there, going riding after/before, how long you going to be there? Give me some details I may just make the run down there to meet you guys. BTW sent you both a PM.
Here is a write up and some pics from the troubleshooting for this problem;

I was able to hear and talk clearly with Vaeagle today on our run. So it seams to be working as far as you having tbl with the Goldwing if it was an 1800 the CB on the 1800 is NOT very Good the one on the Ultra is much better quailty.

Nice  to meet with you David- hope to see you soon

Yes, I enjoyed the ride today too! [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]
I think when I adjusted the squelch on the CB to a lower setting it helped but I have also heard that 2006 bikes can talk to others OK. It's when we talk to older bikes we have problems so I will check with an older bike when I can and see if the lower squelch does the trick.
VAZHOG you sounded great too with your 2006 and the other brand of mike. Thanks again for your help.

Just to let every one know.  Do not know why, but I pulled back the tour pack liner on the inside at the CB Antenna attachement point and was surprised to see that the ground wire had never been attached (laying loose & no nut attached) to the threaded stud going through  the Tour Pack to the antenna base.  As a matter of fact the threaded stud pulled out of the antenna base.

May want to check and see if your bike was assemblied like mine on a Friday, Holiday afternoon!!!!

Has there been any update to the cb transmit problem?  Does a new CB module seem to resolve the problem?  Just wondering, I'm experiencing the same transmit problem, fellow riders reporting that when I'm transmitting I'm blasting their ears out at high volume & garbled.  CB reception, intercom, radio all working fine.    [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Hi PMaitland,
I would follow this course to troubleshoot your CB.
First make sure your radio has software version 8.9 or later.(Download from Harley website)
Second make sure your squelch is set at 1/2 or less and the mike is not too close to your mouth.
Third if you have wind noise while on the highway you might try the cover that goes over the foam windsock . I used model #1LT-WD-50 for the factory mike and it works great.http://www.sierra-mc.com/products.asp?cat=177
I have done all three and I can be heard clearly by new radios, older Harleys and Goldwings so far in my testing. No need so far to replace the CB module itself.
Some talk about tuning the antenna with a SWR meter but I use the freedom Cycles antenna with the knurled knob at the top and have no reception or transmitting issues yet.

Thanks for the info VaEagle.  Have already installed the 8.9 software update.  Squelch & mic are no problem, have tried adjusting both (factory mic and J&M).  Just ordered the windsock cover from Sierra & will double check to make sure I have a good solid ground connection. Will post results once I get a chance to check/try both of those things out.  Thought I read somewhere in here that replacing the cb module itself resolved this issue for some.

Nope.  I've been communicating with a help guy at Harman who is in the team responsible.  They are still working on it, but no acceptable solution yet.  :(

Ed,

Wondering what results you had with the new CB module?

Paul,

Haven't been able to check it out since it was replaced, had a minor fender bender a few weeks ago and the bike is still in the shop.  Should be full up round in a few more days...  Another friend of mine with an 06 Ultra just had his radio replaced a couple days ago for the same problem.  Let you know as soon as I get my scooter back!

Had my bike in for the 10K maint. & tried to get the dealer to replace the cb module with no success.  >:(
Of course when they tested it, it was sitting still & engine not running.
I opened up the cb module (made by Midland) myself for a look to see if any mic gain or rf gain adjustments available.  Unfortunately, while there are a half dozen or so adjustment pots available, none are marked to identify their function.  So unless someone has schematics and/or technical info available, probably not a good idea to start tweaking things blindly...

When They tested it were you there? or did they just say that? What gear did they use to test it did they use your headset if so who did they talk to?

Keep after them!

Good Luck

I wasn't there when they tested it the first time so made them do it again while I was there.  Used my headset (J&M) and transmitted to a couple of different bikes in their shop.  Listened to it myself while they transmitted & couldn't argue with them anymore since it actually sounded OK, loud but OK, even the guys in the shop did comment that it was louder than normal.  Told them that I was going on a ride this weekend with a group & would be back if still getting same over-driven & garbled complaints from others in the group.  I did order & receive the windsock cover from Sierra as suggested previously in this thread so will get my first chance to test that out this weekend too.
