Reliability on all German machines has been my big concern as well. They build some fantastic machines but with all the tech comes higher maintenance costs and lower reliability. Toying with the idea of a luxury car and BMW is out but it's down to MB S550 or the Lexus LS460L with the Lexus getting more of my attention. Can't afford it right now but I can do the research. Any way, all the tech on the BMW was a big factor in looking else where. We'll see how they do in the long term but at least with a HD I can figure out the problems much easier than if I buy a BMW. Not to hj the thread but I'll post up some pictures I took while checking out the GTL on 1 June. Certainly not the slender BMW riders which I'm sure has a lot to do with how we fit/don't fit the bike.

One of the more common issues from that era was the failure of the spline coupling between the ring gear and rear wheel; often at around 30k miles. The OEM fix was to replace the ring and pinion. There was an aftermarket vendor that would machine out the worn spline from the center of the ring gear and weld in a new replacement; this guy did a remarkable job reconditioning this piece, and as I remember it he was very reasonable.

There were other issues of course, but I was always amused whenever I had to take care of a drive coupling, because in that era the BMW folks were the authority on shaft driven motorcycles, and that assembly wasn’t particularly reliable.

*******
Even to this day are still having Final Drive Failures on the GS R1150, GS 1200, K1200s, 1300s. F650 & F800 Series. The aftermarket vendor (forgot his name) is still rebuilding the Final Drives to this day. BMW had still not figured it out, blaming it on the riders. Luckily the 2003 R1150 GS , 2004 GSA, the 2009 F800 GS and the 2006 K1200 GT I have did not experience the Final Drive problems. However, between the F800 GS and G1200 GT there were probably a total of 18 - 20 recalls between them.

Point is, you might check to see if there is a board like this of  K1600 owners.  They might provide some feedback on any known issues.  This board has provided a wealth of information regarding the CVO models.

Sure wish I had one in my garage, right next to the CVO.  :2vrolijk_21:

Well spoken and true regarding Geezer's post. Every bike can come with its share of problems....And what about that engine buzz, or sound, or whine? Nice bike though.  ;)

Occasionally I get the chance to take various other makes of motorcycles for a spin; sometimes just a few miles, other times a few hundred. I noticed that it is not at all unusual for the powertrains of many of these machines to emit various “signature” sounds as you put them through their paces.

This past summer I took a short hop on an early model Royal Star Venture and the obnoxious whiny racket out of that machine made me laugh out loud. I still chuckle when I think about it and recall the thread about the Cruise Drive’s 5th gear.

I’m sure that all of that racket would eventually grow on you, like the peaty taste of an Islay Single Malt, but I didn’t ride the machine long enough for that to happen, though it’s still funny.   ;D

Thanks geezer. I have been on a few of those lurking for over a year now. Others I haven't seen yet so thanks again. Lots of good info on some of those.

About the buzz of most metrics. That was one of the things I liked most about the bike I rode, zero buzz. My right hand did go to sleep but it does that from time to time on my RG.

Yeah, really.  WTF?  That's like a turd in the punch-bowl here.  If you ain't ridin' a Harley, or thinkin' about ridin' one, what could you possibly contribute to, or gain from this Site?  Choices?  This Site ain't about choices.  It's about Harleys, and the people that ride them.  Get a grip.  Don't make me say what I really think.  >:( That would possibly get this thread locked down.  Which, btw, probably ain't a bad idea.  ;) There endeth the lesson.  Later--HUBBARD

I hear you . Planning to do the same this weekend. German engineering, awesome machines. This weekend rained to much . I will head to either the Orlando or Daytona dealer to try it out.
If the weather in NJ holds for tomorrow, I plan on doing a demo ride on the BMW GTL.  Heard and recently read a bunch of good stuff about it.  I'm in the loose market for a touring bike, so thought that I would check out the Beemer. I've rented the Electra Glide on two occasions and although they are great bikes, I sometimes feel that they are a bit top heavy, especially when you add the extra luggage for a two week trip.  I will see if the BMW is more to my handling.

Here's a good one.

Easy to see where Honda got many of their 2012 cosmetic ideas.

The Goldwing is loooooong over due for a real make-over.  The 2012 changes were strictly superficial.

The best thing about the Goldwing, IMO, is the engine.  Smooth Power.... and seems to be pretty much bullet-proof.

This one shows the GTL without the bags or trunk.

Now that's pretty nice to be able to pull the bags and trunk off and the bike still look like a complete bike... like it isn't missing anything.
