Left stranded by brand new CVO
« on: October 10, 2011, 12:56:21 AM »

After filling up my '11 Road Glide Ultra it wouldn't start.  I hear a metallic rattle like a nut or bolt falling through the engine.  My bike is 9 days old with 950 miles on the clock.  I call dealer to get towed, dealer tells me to call HOG.  Got the bike to the dealer that evening.  This happened on 4 Oct.  It took till 8 Oct for the service department to remove the heads.  No priority for CVO's here.

I was shown the damage done. The rear cylinder exhaust valve didn't seat properly, so when the intake valve opened up it clipped the exhaust valve. After it did that, the intake valve sheared off, taking out the spark plug electrode and then rattled along the face of the rear piston gouging away it's smooth finish.

Plan: Moco paying for all that needs to be replaced plus labor. This will be used as a credit towards PLAN B.

Plan B: new upgraded pistons, polish and ported heads, new cylinders, tuner, cams, dyno, 58 mm throttle body, exhaust mods. In essence a Stage lll 110" motor that's expected to put out about 110 HP at the wheel. All covered by factory 2 year warranty.

The above is the short version of my saga which was posted on www.hdforums during the week.

Some first post to break the ice here.

A loner was offered, but I declined it for now. It's raining with more on the way and I'm fighting a head cold.

Sorry to hear about your experience with Harley's fine (?) quality.

I've got a question about Plan B.  Do you mean to say that warranty is paying enough to do all that stuff you listed, or are you saying that all that "not street legal" stuff will be covered under the factory warranty going forward?  I hate to be a party pooper, but the only way that stuff will be covered in the future is if your dealer submits fraudulent claims to H-D on your behalf and manages to get away with it, or the dealership itself covers it.

Good luck.

Jerry, I have to pay out of pocket for the extras.  The warranty the way I understand it pays for most of the labor and the stock parts that are covered.  I'm using this credit towards my engine mods there by saving me time and expense.  I was planning to do the mods in about a year after purchase.  But since this happened now, there's a silver lining that appeared.  As far as future warranty, am told that HD parts will be used in these mods.  I hope theres nothing fraudulent going on.  I've had a good relationship with this dealership over the years.  They have always been above board with myself and other riders I know.

Thank you Mark.
I'm looking forward to being a contributing member.  I already read the first 50 pages of this forum before I posted, hoping to find an answer to why my brand new engine blew.  It appears that there's a silver lining in this as I posted above.

Welcome,

Pulling 110 hp at the rear wheel can be problems down the road especially for the weak bottom end.

I have been there and done that, But I would not listen to reason.

If I had to do it all over, I would just button her up as stock, and if I really still needed to feed the power hunger. I would buy a 120R and have that refined.

no downtime and no warranty issues down the road.

Hindsight is always better, how come?

(PS, I would have spent less money and have 2 engines)

maybe one of them would have been reliable?  Did I mention the down time?

Good luck

Sorry for your troubles.  That seals it for me.  New SEUC, New 120R before it leaves Tilley's.  Sometime early, mid 2012.  8) Later--HUBBARD

I think the point trying to be made is that YOUR dealer may cover warranty work for 2 years, but OTHER dealers (if you have problems on the road somewhere far away) may not do so.  The parts that are being put in, whether HD parts or not, are "race only" parts and Mother Harley is unlikely to cover those under the factory 2 year warranty.  It's one thing to put an exhaust system on the bike and a tuner (which technically voids the warranty), but making dramatic changes to the stock motor is an entirely different matter...there's a LOT of gray area there.  Nobody is saying not to do those things you want to do, but being covered under the factory warranty, all over the country, is another matter entirely.  I would get something in writing from your dealer stating that the parts and labor, if, god forbid, something happens, will be covered at no  charge to you.  At least by them.

BTW...you're doing all this around a crankshaft that is already one of the weak links in the 110...spliting the cases and beefing up the bottom end might be something to consider.  It would be a bummer to do all this and then have the crankshaft scissor...

Hey, stuff happens.  At least when it did happen I was riding alone and locally, just dropped the wife home minutes before.

I had a boat engine that messed up right after buying it. Warranty took care of all the bugs and it's been reliable ever since.

I'm hoping this will be my best mc ever.

If it's only the local HD dealer that will warranty this, i can live with that gamble.  I would hate to split cases unless I'm ready to up grade everything in there.  If I scissor the crank within 2 years, then my local dealership should step up.  There should also be another "silver-lining" there as well.

I thought about replacing the stock motor with the 120R but the engine colors won't match the rest of the machinery and there's no warranty from what I'm told.

If I'm not happy with this CVO, I'll trade it in or sell it within 2 years.

Today marks the 9th day my dealership has my bike.  The same time frame I had possession of my bike since new.

Latest update as of yesterday: Parts have been shipped.

May be I'll have my bike back by the end of next week.

In the meantime, I'm still fighting a 6 day old head cold, so no Biketoberfest for me this weekend.  :-\

You forgot about a turbo with nitrous if you are going to go for the ultra high RPM high HP low torque mods.  What you are doing will kill your low and mid range torque.

Hell keep the bike stock for resale and buy a Goldwing if you want to go fast!!

Trying to stay Harley but the Gold Wing is sounding much better each day.  Too bad it's still got that 5 speed tranny and the cosmetic changes for 2012 suck.

Have you ridden a new Wing long distance? If you are a taller guy like me it can be quite uncomfortable riding with your legs tucked behind you. A few years ago when Honda did a recall on the Gold Wing and every owner had to see his bike being dismantled, I heard so many die hard Wingers swear they would never own a Honda again. We haven't even touched on wind buffeting or riding in a cross wind.

Regarding your issue, talk directly to the factory rep who handles the dealers warranty claims. If that doesn't work then talk to his or her manager. If that doesn't work keep going up the ladder until you get restitution.

I've owned 4 Gold Wings last being a 2006 which I traded last April on my former '10 RK.  After 2006 the Wing had very few issues.  Gold Wings are usually modded for comfort and individuality.  It's very rare a Wing is ever modded for performance.  The issues you brought up are easily remedied by after market seats, highway pegs and windshields.

BTW Thanks for the advice.
