Bike lift question
« on: November 03, 2011, 01:21:02 AM »

So I've been a busy boy getting ready for my year long deployment.

I want to store the CVO with the wheels up off the ground to keep the tires from rotting or cracking. I was thinking about this stand from Harbor Freight.

http://www.harborfreight.com/automotive-motorcycle/lifts-stands/1500-lb-capacity-atv-motorcycle-lift-2792.html#pr-header-2792

Is anyone using this or something similar? I like that it has a stop bar to lower the bike onto so it's not using only hydraulics which are dependant on seals. My fear is that being gone a year the stop bars will fail, or the seals will dry up and I won't be able to get the bike down when I return. My other option is to use my floor jack to set the bike on cinder blocks.

Any other ideas?

save your money,,,, you wont have any issues storing your MC leaning on the 'ole kickstand' ... Change all fluids, wash n' wax, put your battery on a trickle charge and she'll be ready for you on your return next year.. I recently bought a 2001 FXR with 1500 miles and the bike has been sitting in the past owners garage since his last ride back in spring of 2002. The tires are in perfect condition, no cracks, weather or age wear whatsoever..  One year is a short period and  will flash bye before you know it..

Fairly inexpensive piece of mind. Not so concerned about the tires but I like to keep my bike on the lift all winter to keep the front forks/rear shocks from being compressed without any movement  for that long of a period.I also have my bike sit  on a piece of carpet so its not in direct contact with the concrete.

Mark,

Have 3 lifts like the one you're looking at. They work just fine. Store the 3 bikes on the for the winter. Have used them for 3 seasons. No worries on the stop bars. It's a solidly designed safety feature.

I have the same one & it works great, just used it to remove the fuel tank from my truck to replace a bad electric fuel pump.

I've had that harbor freight lift since about 2002. I use it for fluid changes and washing and waxing and when ever I don't feel like sitting on the concrete garage floor. Have also stored the bike on it from time to time. Works good no worries. I did add some grease to wheels and casters, at first it was a little hard to roll.
