Parts carried on bike -- what do you keep?
« on: November 24, 2011, 09:08:25 AM »

Was asked in a PM "what parts should be carried on the bike for road trips."  That seemed an idea worth a public rather than a private discussion.  So here it is:

I don't carry a ton.  Don't carry anything that couldn't be relatively easily changed on the side of the road, in a rest area or, at worst, in a motel parking lot.  In my case the list looks like this:

Each bike has some basic tools in the bottom of the left saddlebag under the rain gear.  Not the factory tool bag but, instead, some decent tools one could actually do something with if need be.  Some spare wire, wire ties, electrical tape, fuse assortment, stainless steel mechanics wire (to hold something up if need be), hose clamps, tire plug kit and a small DC air compressor.  All that lays across the bottom of a saddlebag sealed in baggies and takes almost no space laid out that way.

The actual parts I carry are specific to each bike.  Here the list (yours will vary according to your ride).

05 SEEG:
Crank Sensor
Muffler Hanger Bracket and Bolts
Delphi Fuel Line
Maxi Fuse
1 each of any relay on the bike
Kickstand Rubber
Kickstand Spring
Saddlebag pins (qty 2)
Speedo Sensor

00 SERG
Muffler Bracket and Bolts
Crank Sensor
Speedo Sensor
Marelli Fuel Lines
Relay to replace one each of anything on the bike
Kickstand Rubber
Kickstand Spring
Fuel Pump
Circuit Breaker
Saddlebag pins (qty 2)

Used to carry a cam position sensor on the old bike also.  That was eliminated when the Marelli ignition system was converted using the Delphi/T-Max kit.  The fuel pump for the old bike isn't within the "easy change on the side of the road" inventory list.  Nor really are the Marelli style fuel lines.  But both are something that no one would be expected to stock if ever needed.  Since they are here and they are small there's no reason not to have them with on a road trip.

The fuel pump is also in the bottom of the saddlebag.  Everything else easily fits in a fairing lower glove box (SEEG) or in a pouch on the tour pak's lid organizer.

:2vrolijk_21:   Well thought out list, most of which I also carry. I've also added a set of spare spark plugs, while on the road. Had a couple instances, one broke, another time, one fouled really bad.

Used to carry plugs.  Probably still should.  So small hardly a reason not to.  Just hadn't had one fail in so long they'd fallen off the list.

After not having them when I needed them, I now carry soft ties. Tow truck operators always show up without them.  Doc

I've heard of plugs having the porcelain taken and used as a crack pipe. There was an article, maybe even on here, circulating a while ago. May be more of a Goldwing issue though...aren't their plugs more accessable?

A couple #13 O-rings for away from home fluid changes.

You mean these bikes break down on the road? I thought these were the best of the best. At least
I paid for the best of the best.

If these bikes break down I think I got screwed!!

There is a tool kit somewhere in a saddlebag??? :huepfenlol2:

Insert sarcasm everywhere in this post!!!

You'll never have a breakdown Mark.  All the karma and goodwill that free flow back downwind from that most excellent front fender keep all the bike behind it too mellow to ever lay down.  It'll just run and run and run...

Basic Tools but improved versions of what you get in the kits (including stainless steel wire, black tape, hose clamps).  Tire repair kits, a few sensors, 10' of 10 gauge wire, TPS, ignition key w/cables, spark plug, pint of vodka and spare 40-cal bullets.   :2vrolijk_21:

......Reminds me of riding with my friend (let's call him "Bob") once a couple years back. Bob is an old life-long diehard Harley guy and still owns several but since retiring has purchased a Goldwing for jaunts farther than bar-hopping because he says when taking a road trip, he'd "rather ride than wrench". We pulled into a fuel stop to gas up and as I began grumbling about digging through the little tool bag on the Dyna to find something re-torque my parts that were falling off,  Bob opens the tour-pack on the Wing to reveal an awesome complete set of Craftsman tools. My eyes lit up as I asked him why he had all those tools ?

He said "I carry tools for my friends on Harleys" !
