Was asked in a PM "what parts should be carried on the bike for road trips." That seemed an idea worth a public rather than a private discussion. So here it is:
I don't carry a ton. Don't carry anything that couldn't be relatively easily changed on the side of the road, in a rest area or, at worst, in a motel parking lot. In my case the list looks like this:
Each bike has some basic tools in the bottom of the left saddlebag under the rain gear. Not the factory tool bag but, instead, some decent tools one could actually do something with if need be. Some spare wire, wire ties, electrical tape, fuse assortment, stainless steel mechanics wire (to hold something up if need be), hose clamps, tire plug kit and a small DC air compressor. All that lays across the bottom of a saddlebag sealed in baggies and takes almost no space laid out that way.
The actual parts I carry are specific to each bike. Here the list (yours will vary according to your ride).
05 SEEG:
Crank Sensor
Muffler Hanger Bracket and Bolts
Delphi Fuel Line
Maxi Fuse
1 each of any relay on the bike
Kickstand Rubber
Kickstand Spring
Saddlebag pins (qty 2)
Speedo Sensor
00 SERG
Muffler Bracket and Bolts
Crank Sensor
Speedo Sensor
Marelli Fuel Lines
Relay to replace one each of anything on the bike
Kickstand Rubber
Kickstand Spring
Fuel Pump
Circuit Breaker
Saddlebag pins (qty 2)
Used to carry a cam position sensor on the old bike also. That was eliminated when the Marelli ignition system was converted using the Delphi/T-Max kit. The fuel pump for the old bike isn't within the "easy change on the side of the road" inventory list. Nor really are the Marelli style fuel lines. But both are something that no one would be expected to stock if ever needed. Since they are here and they are small there's no reason not to have them with on a road trip.
The fuel pump is also in the bottom of the saddlebag. Everything else easily fits in a fairing lower glove box (SEEG) or in a pouch on the tour pak's lid organizer.
