I left Burns OR w/ a full tank. Gauge said I had about 248 miles range. Winnemucca is 220 miles according to the sign posts. What I didn't realize, at 11 PM, having been on the road 15 hrs, was that there's a fork in the road to Winnemucca and I'd missed it. One option is shorter (220 miles) the other is longer.

248 miles range if you "behave" -- Speed limit in Nevada is 75 mph, which is on the edge of decent mileage behavior. I pulled into three truck stops just outside of Winnemucca, about 1 AM. All the lights are on, but they're not selling gas. We pulled into Winnemucca about 2 AM w/ "12 miles" range reading on the gauge. If the "Flying J Truck Stop" had not been open (on the main drag), I was prepared to find a casino and sit out the morning until sun up and the stations opened.

We're planning a run to Rachel NV this spring. 970 miles one way. The web site for Rachel warns that there's no gas. Tonopah has gas some 120 miles north. Then Ash Springs or some such . . . 50 miles south. So that's 170 miles between stations. We're beginning to think maybe the 2 gallon spare can that fits in the saddle bags might be a good idea.

Nevada keeps calling my name -- desert, dry, desolate, no traffic, open ranges.

My wife uses the HD planner to set up a general route.  When we are on the road, I use the folding flat paper mappy thingys... :nixweiss:

I carry AAA road maps for the states I'm riding in. I've been keeping the relevant map in the "tri-pocket" behind the windshield. Now that I've swapped out windshields and the tri-pocket no longer clears, I'm keeping the map in the interior pocket of my jacket. There's nothing quite like blowing past a junction and down the road only to discover 50 miles later that you took a wrong turn.

The down-side with hard copy maps is that they go out of date. My Rand-McNally US Road Maps is dated 1986. A quick reference for the major highways, but for current data the way to ride is to use a reliable online source.

I still like to look at a map for the "big picture", but a GPS sure is nice to take 95% of the potential errors out of the picture.  It is especially useful in cities when traveling, and you can pay 100% attention to driving rather than looking for street/road signs.

HD Ride Planner- How come nobody told me about it?

 ;D

Never knew it existed- here all this time I use Google Maps and click and drag the route around to make my own custom route. Then I would print it out, but since it wasn't on the GPS, I'd have to ask the GPS to go to towns along the way of my route, in order to get it to go on the route I created.

I just planned out a 3 day trip I'm doing this week in NY and PA. Ride Planner is as easy to use as Google Maps, but since it's an HD app, it shows you the dealerships, plus nice roads in the area, and with one click you can have your map route you to a dealer along the way.

The best part is it sent it all to my GPS. I don't even have a "HD Zumo", I just have the Zumo 220, which is a basic motorcycle GPS, but fortunately is was compatible and it loaded it on there in literally 2 seconds.

We'll see if my custom route is the exact route that is now on my GPS- after you load it, the Planner says the "route may differ" which would defeat the purpose of this whole thing, but I'm guessing that's just a disclaimer or something.
