Smart phone for Navigation??
« on: December 04, 2011, 01:21:20 PM »

Is anybody doing this?

I like the idea of the Zumo 660/665.  I have read so many here with freeze up/lock up problems so I have been looking for an alternative.
I don't mind paying 3 times the going rate for a GPS as long as it works for a number of years.

So I was looking at the ironcross audio instructions and was thinking the iphone covers the navigation, camera, phone, and music, and more.
The first down side to this I can see is the of course the iphone will not be water proof.

Right now my phone is the HTC EVO 4G and the nav is awesome.  I could just have the cig lighter charger plug into that and then a cable to the aux port and use this phone.
Not in love with the idea of cables all over the place.

Just looking for some thoughts good or bad.

This is what I am using now, Iphone 4s with nav. and like you said powered by cig. lighter which that cord is the old telephone style which wraps around handle bar (twice) and is tight and no excess, and using the Riders claw and their cord being routed by their directions there is no excess cord hanging anywhere, with everything going through the phone... calls, navigation, music (Pandora) it all works well whether through the headset or speakers.
If I had to I could use a tank bag with the water proof clear unit holder if I ran into weather.

I use the iPhone 4S to navigate using the MotionX Drive and MotionX GPS apps.  Audio and charge pass directly though modified cable from Iron Cross Audio. I'm having Jim (HD_Dude) swap that cable for the new nifty item here http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=68732.0

The MotionX Apps are VERY good and you can sync a .gpx file from Garmin to MotionX GPS app quite easily. The other thing this app will do is "track" routes that you go on and provide some historic data for places you may want to go back to. It also does "auto-locate" that will send a GPS location while you are on the road. I do this when I travel alone in the event something happens at least my wife will know where I am. Here's a sample of that. http://maps.google.com/?t=p&z=15&ll=39.325070,-120.385521&q=http://share.gps.motionxlive.com/shr/x/kmz/933e2261e1f3103c5d33e80ff268eb3c

Here's a few samples of the "route recorder" on MotionX GPS.  They just did an update on this APP that seems to have a LOT of upgrades as well.

One down side to this setup is you can make changes with gloves on but not  huge deal. It does work when off the cell grid as well.

I have the same phone, used it on a trip last year. Bought a ball attachment and a clip holster, drilled and screwed them together for a mount then bought a Bluetooth stereo earplug set up, clipped it to my helmet and synced the phone to it. Worked great, now have my eagle with a garmin so don't need it but passing it to my son and his RG custom. Sprint store has a waterproof hard case and holster to fit, that's what I used.

This is the direction I'm going. I've got a large screen droid and like my nav function. And since its not model specific, when you swap phones its still useable.

I have used my Droid X many times in the car and it works great! I use the google maps app and have had great success with it. I used to use VZ navigator on my old phone and it worked good also. They want $10 a month for the VZ navigator now so I use the free mapss app. I just purchased a Iron Aces mount for the SERG and will start using it on the bike next year. The mount I purchased is a beautiful piece of machine work and almost a shame to cover it up. I have a proclip mount and then a car dock to hold the phone. I will post some pictures once it is mounted.
