Trailer Questions
« on: December 08, 2011, 07:34:30 AM »

Of you that occasionally trailer.  What are your opinions on Aluminum vs Steel.  Single axle vs tandem.  Length and width?
I am looking for a couple of reasons.  A real long trip with the wife , trailer due to health.  Home storage in the winter time
for outside furniture. Pulling with a Toyota 4 runner / V8 motor.  Right now found a pretty good deal on a single axle/brakes
7x12 set up for cycles. 2011 dealer price $4100 / United trailer.  Welcome to all comments and suggestions:)

If It were me, I'd go Tandem (justsayin)

Always a trade off. I've a single axle v-nose aluminum that works well enough. Don't know the dimensions but the wheels are out side the box. Supposed to hold two dressers but I don't see how short of pulling the bags, lowers and probably the crash bars. Pull w/ a Ford F-150 5.0 4x4 and it does OK but not great. Flat lands are OK but mountains are a real strain. To do over again I'd bump up to a F-250 and a larger tandem v-nose. I prefer the two axles for the added security and ease of maneuvering. Regardless of your decision, get a good ride on stand. Mine came w/ a cheapo and cost me a front fender.

Aluminum is lighter, tandem is steadier, v-nose is a must (gas saver). IMHO

You may want to also consider the low hauler type that aren't as tall (create less drag) if you don't want/like the V-nose type.

I have a twin axle, torsion suspensinon, flat nosed, low hauler "edge" package from Haulmark,,,I have squeezed 2 dresser in it before and it works, just have to check straps or you may rub the levers on the aluminium wall(fenders outside) , I did change the to wheeldock drive in's to make it safer and easier for a one man gang...

I have both kinds.  I now use the same Haulmark that is pictured above, keep it in my carport with both bikes inside.  This is a really good trailer.

I also have a 10 x 5 V-Nose signle axel that is currently at my sons house with his bike parked in it.  Obviously I used this one until I got another bike and needed the additional room.  This one is a single axel with no trailer brakes.

I have condors in both the trailers so that when I park a bike it stays upright.

I suppose it really depends on what you really want it for, if you only will be taking one bike do you need a two-bike trailer?

Of course if the additional expense is not an issue the additional room can be very handy.  We only use the trailer to go to Michigan on vacation, only taking one bike up north but with mulpiple adults and three dogs in the Suburban we can put the luggage in the trailer too.

Just what works for me.

I have an 8.5x14 v-nose tandem aluminum.  Weighs 2K with a 6K gross.  very nice but seldom use it...too much work to use it to pick up bike at dealer.  Great for trips to Joplin or Loveland from the east coast.  Holds two dressers plus a bushtec trailer or three dressers.  While it is the widest (w/o wide load certs) it is the minimum I would do.  Nice to have the full room for the dressers yet it still feels tight when strapping down etc.  I also have two condor chocks plus a pingle in the v-nose.  Tandem just has too many benefits for me not to go that way... except at the tolls!  Again, I find it a pain to use for short hauls and am considering a small single open to get the bike to/from the shop.  But for long hauls, it is the minimum for me.

And torsion axles.   JMHO.

Long term maintenance issue..  Screwless exterior. :2vrolijk_21:

It all depends on how much you want to spend.

For dressers you want a minimum of 7' wide. I have a 7x12 that I can fit two baggers in, but not much else. If you're only moving one bike 10' would do. I always go for dual axles, but I need the capacity for other uses. But a single axle can carry two bikes. Brakes are always a good idea, especially if your trailer gets close or over to your vehicles weight. The lower height and v-nose trailers help reduce drag alot, but the lower height can make loading a pain if you're a tall guy. aluminum all the way.

Have the Haulmark dual axle V nose 7X12 lowhauler like a few others on this forum. Use it probably twice a year and rent it out another time or two a year. Never had any problems. Everyone says it pulls like a dream. I pull it with a Chevy Astro minivan V6.  A bit under powered but that's not the trailer's fault. Highly recommended. Might spring for an aluminum model of similar design if money were no object. Don't want to get carried away with a trailer because I'm prefer riding the bike but for the times the Mrs. & I go somewhere for a while and need to bring the pups and 2 bikes, it does the trick.

Getting pretty close as to what I am looking to buy.  A Blackhawk tralier , made by Stealth.  All aluminum, tandem axle, 7x12 v-nose.
I like the 30" slant at the top front along with the v-nose for less drag.  Dealer does not have one, ordering one.  Polar white
front, black at the back.  Looking to ride more than trailer, but will have it when needed.  Thank your all for your replies:)
