Prepaid service only benafits the dealership.....not the rider.

You must be a Michigander?  Ha!  I said the same thing several threads up!  Hard to find a good shop, store closings are making it difficult to get your bike in and out, and with them being busy, their service and quality of work sucks!

You would be better off if you just paid into your own "maintenance fund" as you ride.  Charge yourself 5 or 10 cents a mile for riding and put the money in your maintenance fund. Now when you need maintenance or mods to your bike, the money is there waiting.  This method has often been used by hot rodders or aircraft owners for years.

I would agree most the time.

However, my wife, averages 28K miles a year.  Many times her bike needs service when I am out of the country working.  I work 28 days on, 4 days travel and 24 days home.  So she can get her bike serviced when she needs it, not just when I am home.  I have known the tech for 10 plus years, and changed dealerships when he changed.

I figure 18 services on her bike for $1200.00 is a damn good deal.  Not even 70 dollars a service. :)

Granted most people do not put 86K on a bike in 3 years.  However I feel I got my moneys worth on her heritage.  So I just got the same plan for her new street glide.  6 days after she got the bike we had the 1 K service done on it, that is in Mid Dec in TN.

Dave...in your case, it definitely makes sense, and is a bargain to boot.  My thing is I actually like doing it myself, I don't trust the dealership (thought they are better than they used to be), and I save money in the process, plus get to use my choice of fluids.  I just keep receipts and write it down in the owner's manual.

With as many miles as your wife rides per year, you are most definitely getting your money's worth, and then some.

A lot of dealers closed their doors lately - if yours does too, your money is lost.

If you happen to find better service elsewhere - your money is lost.

No, I don't think I would consider this "deal".

At my dealer it's called "Priority Maintenance Plan " . Includes : Transferable to another vehicle purchased, Pick up or delivery, Motorcycle loaners  , Priority scheduling with 24-hour turnaround , Syn3 upgrade, Wash and wax with each service. ALL factory scheduled maintenance for 10 years , Unlimited miles ...$2,300. My dealer is a  established outfit with a good reputation .  With the price of maintenance up here i figure (hope ) that I should get my money back around 20,000 miles.  I realize that a Maintenance Plan is not for everybody , but for me it's a good deal .

If I had to chose a plan, that would be the one I would get.  I don't see how they would make any money on it.

If I had to chose a plan, that would be the one I would get.  I don't see how they would make any money on it.

They won't in this specific isolated instance.  These programs are sold similarly to health club memberships.  The vast majority of owners ride 700 miles a season and will never use the benefit of the plan.  Just like health clubs, look at membership registrations in January, by April the places are empty.  Dealerships bank on this, plus the opportunity to 'upsell' services when the customer comes in, not to mention customer retention tying them to the store over time.  Dealerships do sell programs that lose money.  They know that in some instances they may be a loser, but everything is thrown into one pot and they make their money as well as several residual benefits.

Extended Warranties, Extended Service Plans on cars, boats, motorcycles....make sense IF the consumer gets the use out of the vehicle that would warrant the service intervals, or prematurely put it out of warranty.  Again, these people are the EXCEPTION and not the RULE.  Look whats for sale on Ebay, a lot of Harleys with an average of 700 miles a year.  I bought mine with 1,600 miles!

Yea, for every 1 they lose money on, they have 9 more that they make money off of.  The ESP plans are the same way...for those who put lots of miles on a bike, or who keep one a long time, it may make sense.  This bike I have now will problably be around here a long time, so I got the ESP + Tire and Wheel, but didn't pay full retail for it.  I figure that even if I never have any motor issues, it will pay for itself if something like the HK head unit goes out.  And with a 110" motor, it's likely that something is going to happen to it when it gets 30K + on it.  Sad, but true.  And, if you have to sell the bike for some reason, it can be a selling point.

If you don't know which end of a screwdrive to use, it's probably a good idea to get a Maint. Service Plan, IF you think you'll keep the bike through at least 20-30K miles.

Some people just don't ride much...we've all seen '05-'06 CVO's that have 5K on them...sometimes less.  I've only got 4600 miles on mine, which is low for me, but that will change in the next couple of years.  I had 25K on my '06, and had to sell it in '08, and that was with another bike or two to ride at the same time.

Hmmmm!  I would check into the details on that Mercedes contract.  I used to run a MB store and that doesn't sound right, sounds awful cheap especially when brakes alone are $1,400.00?
