110 Upgrades, New Parts list
« on: January 05, 2012, 10:37:56 AM »

Currently have a FuelMoto SS headpipe, Klockwerks mufflers, SEPRT & Zippers A/C.

Need info or opinions on upgrading some or all of parts on bike now to add cams, cometic head gasket, push rods and possibly another programmer.

A local shop I was in contact with suggested if I do these upgrades, I should have a better flowing exhaust like a D&D Boss Fatcat to optimize the setup. He is a Diamond dealer thru Woods Cams and comes highly recommended.

He advised the A/C would have enough flow, but he would use a PC5 for dialing it in. Cams were a good suggestion and would work well w/o headwork, but with headwork would run alot better. Also suggested a bump in compression to get the full effect.

NOTE: I dont want to ride my bike and seem like I'm always in "race mode" with a big cam & alot of "thump". Just trying to optimize a good touring bike.

With all the research, I have found that you can't get one with some comprimizing. Any thoughts would be appreciated...

Thanks, Paul

I am running the SEPRT, the Zippers air filter"the Ultra, Mega, taller filter" and D&D boss on my 117in, I havent had any air flow problems with eather. Personally I dont do cams with out doing some matching head work. why spend the money for the inprovement of cams and have the stock heads choke up the improvement. Have your bottom end checked "crank run out" then have the crank welded balanced and trued, if you are going to bump the compression. Guess the biggest question is what do you want from the bike, Touring, 1up or 2up, a toy, daily rider. I usually build the motor for torque and reliability and try to keep the compression down less than 10.25-1 on my bikes that i use for touring, intersate, 2up and heavy. For me a good touring bike has a great smooth Torque curve from 2500 rpms up and will run on what ever pump gas i can get out in the middle of nowhere with traveling.  but everyone is different.

From all the research, Cams do a few things. Reduce cranking pressure, overlap of some cams eventually make the engine run cooler and a few more Ft Lbs of torque.

I ride mostly two up, but would like a little bit better #'s and have a better fuel effecient and smoother running bike. Im only getting 30-34 mpg w/ my setup now. Not much faith in our local dealer to set up a good map.

Thanks...

I really question the idea of going to a piggyback EFI controller, especially when you already have a tool at your disposal to dial in the ECM really well for what you've already got and for what you're considering doing.  Other than that I don't feel I have further opinion of much value in the matter.  Except that maybe, based on your last bit of info regarding your present mileage, you might see about getting your ECM dialled in better for your current setup.  It may offer improved satisfaction for another season or so; and may be entirely sufficient in itself.

Everything you just listed comes with the proper pipe and tune. Cams can add a little more.

Pual,
Mike Cat's Cycle Works, in Kenner?
If looking for a good strong touring build, the Wood 777, and a good set of cylinder heads will have you rolling very well.

pre 06 the pc was a decent way to tune a bike

post 06 the pc is probably the last option if there are no other tuners available or no other parts available where you are. the reasons are very straight forward. when you install the pcv you unplug the o2 sensors and plug in a o2 eliminator - so the bike is now running same as a pre 06 bike. and then you tune the bike based upon "best guess" of humidity, temp, pressure, altitude, etc and supply fuel based on best guess of throttle etc. all newer cars, trucks, motorcycle, boats, and planes use o2 sensors so that the ecm can constantly tune the engine to match the current conditions, hd was one of the very last companies to adopt real time continuous tuning.

there is a reason that modern cars get 200 hp out of a 1.8 liter engine and get 25 mpg doing it - the 02 sensor in the exhaust is the number one requirement to get high hp from small engines.

hd's current ongoing problem is that as the stock hp increases the heat increases and since they are not water cooled its a very delicate balancing act. but they still do get over twice the hp of my 79 did in basically the same engine.

Decision made... Ordered the Woods 777 cam kit from Brian at FuelMoto. They had good success w/ their 2-1-2 SS headpipe with that combo. Good price for Cams, gasket kit, pushrods & torington bearing...$549.00 plus 19.00 s & h...

Local shop to do install for $350- $400. Need to get dynoed & dialed in after & should have a better running ride.

Thanks to all who chimed in and God Bless...

I'll post #'s when all is done.

Paul, just checking back with you.  Did you do this install and tune?  Any dyno numbers or butt dyno impressions?

Just looking at a similar set up, curious about your results.

I just picked my 09 SERG up Saturday, 110 ported heads, new springs, decked .40, Woods777, stock OE pistons, .30 gasket, big sucker air, Thunderheader, SERT, stock throttle body(ported)...... 107h.p. 124 torque, this thing is a "Hammer" off the line and pulls so much harder through the entire powerband. I trusted this website and valued opions, not to make the mistake of taking my bike to the dealer for their 110 upgrade, I am so happy I took the time to go through all the threads and really get a broader perspective on the many different applications one could potentially entertain.....thanks to everyone for their input!

Gstrickland,

Glad your happy that in the end is what it is all about :)

A few questions:

What did the bike dyno before this upgrade?   If so, what pieces did you leverage from the original dyno to get to these numbers.
would you post the dyno sheets for others to see not many 777 builds out there yet.
Who did the headwork and what was the compression of the build?
Did you do the build?  If not, who did the build for you?   Would you recommend them again?
What was the cost of your build?

There is no SERT for an 09, I think you are referring to the new harley tuner the SESPT.

I had the local tuner "Valley Racing, Beecher Illinois" did the build, he has a guy who does all his porting, work his magic on these 110 heads...I will post the dyno sheet later. I was pretty adamant in regrds to the stock pistons being replaced, my tuner had done several of these builds without utilizing 10:5 pistons and had numbers a little more mid teen range for h.p. I wasn't looking for a tremendous h.p. gain, more torque. Numbers before were 88 h.p. and 98 torque with big sucker, thunderheader and tuner, it was a very good gain........price $2800.00 with a 20,000 mile service included. This included new adj. pushrods as well.
