Drop-in Cam suggestions
« on: January 21, 2012, 01:00:42 AM »

going to change out the cam in my 2008 CVO Road King.  Stock motor with VH true duals, High Flow filter and PC-V.  Ride mostly solo in the 2K to 4.5K RPM range.  Woods is recommending their new TW-777 cam and Andrews the 54H.  Many here have used teh 54H, but can't seem to find much about the 777 in a stock 110".  Anyone running this came in a stock engine with exhaust and intake done?

If you truly ride in that rpm range you'll probably not find a cam that makes more torque there. If I rode a 110 I'd probably look at the wood 5 or the t man 600.

CR-575
Here's an example of a CVO bike that has nice peak torque with a good curve and with aggregate torque more to the left. The CR-575's are consistently quiet. Ramp speeds being biased for quiet operation was part of the design criteria.
BTW, heads were not pulled for this build.

I used the 54h in a 2008 streetglide 96" i was very happy with it, nothing else done to the motor. I have the TW-555 in my cvo now and its a very strong cam. There are alot of members running different cams and alot of great knowledge, as long as its not a SE cam you will be happy. :drink:

Although Bob Woods was recommending the 777, a couple of the highly respected builders on this board that I spoke to recommeded the 555 for a stock engine.  Their view was that the 777 with higher lift would require bumping up the compression above 10 to make the 777 work.  Leaning towards the TW-555 at this stage, which I understand is very similar to the Andrews 54H

Will do S&S adjustable pushrods at the same time and cam bearings.  Debating whether I should change out the lifters will I'm there.  Bike only has about 4k miles

My bike as AC, V&H dresser dual headers and V&H slash-cut mufflers

I installed the SM600 by tman a great cam.  But the range that your riding in,  its going to be hard to beat the stock SE255 cam for riding under 4,500 RPM.

I ended up going with the Woods 777.  I ordered from FuelMoto as they are a big contributor to this site and would also ship USPS to me in Canada.  I will post the results in a few weeks when it goes to my local tuner

They're not a contributor to THIS site, but I know what you mean. What part of Canada are you from?

got it wrong, they are a big contributor to other HD forums I read.  More importantly to me is they will ship USPS

I'm in Toronto (downtown).  I will have Bruce at Dynotunes in Burlington install the cam and dyno the bike.  New beargings, pushrods and lifters are going in at the same time.

Oh, I see you're from T.O.- couldn't see that earlier on my iphone.

Last I heard, Bruce mainly tunes with the Power Commander. Not an issue if that's the tuning module you want to use. Also, I've heard varying opinions on his tuning abilities.

I'm from the GTA as well, and I asked because I was going to recommend a guy named Don Morris (Stay Tuned Systems) in Mount Hope (Hamilton mountain near the Hamilton airport).

He is dead set against just doing cams in the 110's- he says the 110 is a different animal than the other HD engines, and a cam alone won't accomplish much. I tend to buy into this, because most dyno charts I have seen with just a cam swap alone may have raised peak numbers, but hasn't dramatically improved the curves down low where it's useful. He has a package that he does to our engines, which  he does head work, re-uses the cams (he re-degrees them), and re-uses other stock parts. I think it is a very intelligent and efficient approach to maximizing what HD has given us, and doesn't waste money on a bunch of unnecessary aftermarket parts. He has now done sixteen 110 builds, and consistently gets 107 hp/130 tq with his builds. Ball park, you're looking at between $2,000-$3,500 for this, depending on what exhaust and tuner you have. May sound like a lot at first, but if you really do the math, by the time you buy a full exhaust and cam, your more than halfway there.

PM me if you want more info on all this.

Also JKM, never mind this shipping to Canada business- since we are only 90 min to the border, we can take advantage of that and save a bundle by purchasing on-line through the numerous US discount vendors, and getting cheap/free shipping to a US shipping address. I use these guys, who are in Buffalo-

www.kinek.com

All they charge is $5-$8 per box that you pick up. That's it. No monthly fee, use them once or a hundred times, doesn't matter- that's all they charge. When you cross back, you just pay the 13% HST (on what you declare  ;))and that's it- there are no extra duties on bike parts.

I've saved a bundle, and wish I would have used their services years ago.

The 555 needs to at 10.4 cr, to show it's true worth. :)

Thanks North Star.  Bruce tuned my bike last year and installed a PC-V at the same time.  I bought the bike used and it had the old SE tuner system which I heard was difficult and labour intensive to work with.  Bruce tuned my bike at 92HP/108TQ with only a high flow filter and V&H true dual exhaust (probably not the best exhaust system).  I was very happy with the tune.  I think some people get mislead by inflated dyno numbers online and expect every tuner to achieve those numbers.  In my case Bruce showed me that by simply going to STD from SAE improved my number by 3-4 HP and TQ, which some tuners do to show the customer a higher number.  I decided to go with the 777 for the higher lift in case I decide to do head work in the future.  I will try it this coming summer with stock compression and decide what to do from there.

As for the US mailbox, I have one in Niagary Falls from US Address Inc..  Shipping was only an extra $30 and USPS only charges you $5-8 processing fee (compared to the highway robery of UPS).  Unfortunately the trip is not worth it if I'm picking up one parcel.  My GF usually buys lots of shoes, purses, clothing through this mailbox so we make the trip a few times a year

I will post the dyno chart in a few weeks when I get the bike back
