Engine Noise--Ticking Cams?
« on: January 29, 2012, 07:17:17 PM »

Hey guys,

Just got my new bike and wanted to make sure I am not just being paranoid as I learn all the new sounds, shakes and shimmies that this bike has.  I am coming off a Suzuki Boulevard which sounded like an "angry sewing machine".  After researching it, I found that it was supposed to sound like that and what I was hearing was the automatic valve adjusters and the cams as they cycled.

I have noticed this same sound in my new bike and wanted to make sure that hearing a ticking sound from the motor was normal.  It seems to be slightly worse in some gears and at higher RPMs, but I do believe it has been making this sound since I drove off from the dealership.

I am at 120 miles and followed the break in suggestions as stated in the manual...well, I may have broken 3000 rpms once or twice during the first 50 miles (damm, how can you not with these beasts!  LOL)

Anyway, I just want to make sure hearing some ticking or "Sewing Machine" sounds from the engine was normal.

Thanks!!!!

Without hearing it it's hard to say...but yes these motors do make a good amount of noise...mostly in the 2200-2800 rpm range.

Yep I agree they are noisey.  I call it the terrible 2s  Ha Ha
I did change to redline 20W60 for the summer time heat here in Florida, it didn't really change much as far as noise but it did raise the HOT idle oil pressure about 4lbs  also use redline trans oil with shockproof  only bad thing about redline shockproof is the very strong gear lube smell.  When its hot and I come to a stop I get a whiff every once and a while.
 Enjoy you new ride.

Some people may dissagree but if you want it broken in properly ride it like you stole it and get those rings seated. If there's something wrong in there make sure to break it before the warrantee expires.  JMHO

My .02 cents worth  :kiss2: The rings are actually seated in the first 50 miles, anything after that doesn't change anything

I agree turn up the radio or the noise will drive you crazy. I did change my lifters after 40,000.

LOL...great suggestions, but I would hate to cover up a problem only to have it get worse...but trust me the radio is rock'n and the pipes are coming!  I spoke with the guys at HD and they agree that what I am hearing is normal engine noise.  Just wanted to make sure.
