Heat Demons
« on: February 02, 2012, 10:20:33 PM »

I know there has been much written about reaming the throttle side of the bars to install the Heat Demon grip heaters, but does anyone know if this still holds true for the 2012 SESG? Is the ID of the throttle side of the bar still 13/16 and needs to be 7/8 to install these?

Pull your grip and measure?  Won't take but a few minutes to know for sure and be able to then tell everyone else that doens't know.

I haven't had the grips off of a throttle by wire yet and I don't have the manual yet. Anything to watch out for?

No.  Grip just slides off the end.

The grip came off, no problem. But I can't seem to get the TBW sensor to slide out far enough. I'm guessing I need to take the outer fairing off to get some slack on the wires. Maybe clip a wire tie or something.

That is probably more hassle (and potential damage) than it's worth.  Even if you clipped the wire tie that binds all the harnesses together just below the bars you still might have to tug harder than you'd like to get the harness to actually slide.  Those sensors have sometimes been a bit delicate and not survived being pulled on from one end or the other.  At this point unless you really really need to know I'd punt.

I put it back together for the time being. When I have more time I'll give it another try. It's got to come apart to install the grip heaters anyway. Sooner or later.

Thanks. You kind of read my mind. I read all the threads on the subject but couldn't seem to find, again, the one with the link to the hand reamer that was used. I'd prefer to not have to take the bars off. So we'll see.

You need to disconnect the wires and push the pins out of the connectors and mark wiring. Then remove the TBW sensor. Then the fun begins, drill out the inside of the bar to 7/8". Or remove handlebar and take it to a Machine shop and have them ream out to 7/8. Need to be that size all the way to the wire opening.
